Hey so I had a idea to paint my eldar army and I think I want either a black or grey base with purple armor and either a gold faceplate or bone faceplate (if I use a lot of purple and gold I could call them the pimp-dars lol) but I heard somewhere that eldar and metallics make no sense as they use mostly bone for their armor and vehicles... So I know gold goes quite well with purple but I figure I should ask what other colors I can use instead and maybe what color the guns should be. I hope I am not being annoying but I just have a hard time thinking of paint schemes that I like and that is feasible for a newbie to paint without too much heart ache so if anyone could suggest on colors that works well with purple or if the scheme I have in mind sounds good let me know.
Thanks, Ron

You can do purple with a golden yellow a deep yellow and you then can highlight with a brighter yellow. For a golden yellow take a brown and mix it with your yellow. It will give it you a great effect. Yes most of Eldar equipment is bone made, but Eldar are usually stick to bright colors shemes.

Nice ty, I also thought instead of yellow would orange look ok? I am trying to create a one of a kind scheme (impossible I know lol) And thanks again, would vallejo black grey or german grey work better for the under suits? Unfortunately my choices locally is severely limited...

Check out my dark Eldar, I am completely fond of being unique. If you want a unique scheme, try free hand, try camo patterns, try different effects.

Ok I will look at them, I would love to do some free handed stuff but my drawing even with paper and pencil is so bad im not sure I could draw a stick figure with a ruler haha! Maybe I should start working on my drawing skills...
Edit: Very very nice! I like them a lot and especially that banshee too, like I said maybe I need to try to obtain some drawing skills or maybe experiment with a airbrush trick that looks wicked maybe... Hmm time to brainstorm...

Recommendation, get a color wheel and you can get a feel for what colors look good together, then take some old sprues and throw some color on it and see if you like the colors together. Then you can also try some free hand on your paint palette (you can scrap clean and try again.) try some patterns shapes, blue base with some orange camo scratched look.

Thanks for the props Cakie
But you shouldn't listen to me, just take some creative ideas and do what feels good and right to you. After all true art is a perception and is what you see is right. It's the innovators that do something off the wall and out of the box that paves the way for others to follow.

Here is where I get my inspirations for color schemes and ideas. Google, I google stuff like poisonous frogs, harlequin, and whatever comes to mind. Like this is how I want to paint my tyranids when I get some

Oh yea I cannot wait to see how those tyranids turn out and the more I look at your dark eldar the more I am leaning towards changing my mind on a eldar army. Hmm will need to experiment with painting camo, if it comes out terrible I can always strip and redo until it comes out how I want it.

Nice thing about camo, you can't really mess it up.

True enough, unless I am trying to get an identical pattern on multiple models. But what would I camo? The Undersuit or the armor plates or just the helmet?
I also thought of another idea for another effect and it would be to obtain a brush with only few bristles and with some drying retarder to make it look like scratches? Like purple with orange scratches? No idea where to obtain such brush though or if dry brushing would give a similar effect.

So I did a very rough paint job to see how I liked Purple and Yellow, I like it quite a bit but I accidentally got some purple on the yellow mask and in order to cover it up I had to put on so many layers of yellow that it made the eyes have nearly no detail left... (looks like another strip job imo)
Keep in mind this is just a quick paint job as there are many more things to purple-ize and grey needs another coat but I have a yellow stripe on the backpack sensors that I liked and I think I will keep that but yellow is such a difficult color to fix if I make any mistakes that I was contemplating going with a grey faceplate. But by doing so I lose like 90% of the yellow and the model might as well be just purple and grey, since my hands are not the most steady I cannot fathom how difficult the eyes would be to paint without accidentally mucking up the models faceplate unless I paint the eyes very first thing and just pray to god my hands don't spasm on me while painting the purple or yellow again.
*end rant*
Edit: Also how do people get such clean lines around the face mask? That was probably the number one thing I was about while painting, Space marines seem to be a walk in the park to paint for me but these colorful space elves are a nightmare if I want to do things right....

It's how you paint, some people like to go fast and less trips to the paint palette, where I prefer to go a little slower and take more trips to the paint palette. As for lines, some people water down ink and apply it. Otherwise to help with steady hands, use the table and I personally like to make the painting triangle, where you hold the model and paint brush with your thumb and index finger, and the touch and apply pressure on my pinkie with my wrists on the edge of the table top to brace upon. That helps with the stability.

Again thank you so much for your help, guess I will need to research on what inks people buy or if I can get away with a gloss varnish then a wash mixed with badab black and my purple paint... hmm

So I tried the camo thing out and just could not get it to look "Right" on the guardians so I opted to try some airbrushing stuff and think I may found something workable but do not know how I should proceed.
I took a net that I used for my aquarium when I still had it and cut it off and used it as a stencil for the heads, I airbrushed golden yellow and then placed the net over it and hit it with Naggaroth Night. The picture is pretty terrible as I cannot get my cell phone to take decent macro shots, but I am staring at my model and I am wondering... Now what?
I would like to add some more yellow somewhere but have not the faintest idea where and or if I should just leave it at that and touch up the purple and paint the grey in the face/undersuit and stuff like that...
Btw sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead, I could not decide if starting a new thread for this would be worse so I figure I would go for what I thought might be the lesser evil, so to say.
EDIT: I also got my Badger Ghost Tints from amazon today so maybe I can do something with those as well
