Anyone know if I can turn a normal crisis suit into a commander? or maybe another model altogether that would be a nice stand in? I don't like finecast models.

Outer Space, Apparently

you don't need to use that new fancy crisis suit as your commander. A normal battlesuit with whatever upgrades you want on it and some decent markings to make it stand out clearly does fine.

Take a normal battlesuit model, and one of those gold-star stickers that schoolteachers use. Affix gold star to battlesuit model somewhere. Done.

The normal Crisis Suit was the only model for years, only lately with alternative head and weapon parts. So it is standard size. The bigger Finecast version looks fancy but is not compulsory.

Forge World has some nice alternatives, but in resin.

OK, I was wondering about non gw miniatures as well though... Anyone know some of those that could work?

Ah.... some of the Infinity units have a very Tau feel to them, though I think the scale is off. I think Infinity is 25mm scale.
