So... a few weeks ago we met a kind fella on a train who was clearing out his 1990s eldar, and donated us some warp spiders which Santa has just augmented with a couple of Wave Serpents, Dire Avengers and Warlocks.

We saw the Biel-Tan scheme in the display at Nottingham and liked it a lot. Has anyone ever seen a painting guide for the scheme, with thorns? Is there an old White Dwarf or codex that features a how-to guide?

Thanks in advance, and we hope Santa brought you all what you wanted.

Paul and Curtis

My method for white is
1. White undercoat (you can use bright grey but i have just white spray home)
2. Cover all white part with celestra grey
3. Nuil oil wash over grey
4. Again celestra grey but leave black in Recesseres
5. Over celestra grey apply mix of white and celestra grey (i use 2 part of white and 1 part of grey)
6. Edge highlight with pure white

You can se result of first 5 steps on picture
P.S. On picture i used mix 1:1 but it was too grey for me so now i use mix from my tutorial

Thanks folks, very helpful

I've seen mention of an analysis of the 'thorn' painting in either White Dwarf or an earlier codex. Anyone recall which it might have been?

I just looked at the second and third edition Eldar rulebooks, All that is mentioned in those is that it is a sinuous line, with small triangles off of it. That was mentioned in the tips and tricks section, but it isn't exactly involved.

I bet that there is a white dwarf out there that has much more detailed help. Sorry!

well, there was a post on another forum which speculated the info was in a codex, so you've proved that incorrect - which is in itself helpful. So thanks, SBG. Will have to work out a way of finding out what's in White Dwarf back issues (I've seen rumours there's something in issue 302, so I'll keep looking).

for my thorns I start with a black line, then do the pointed triangles off of it, after this, I use a find detail brush to put a smaller line of mechanicus standard grey through the middile vine and in the middile of the larger thorns, ill try and put up a pic of my fire prism and war walkers in a sec so you can hopefully see what I mean

Just in case anyone else is wondering about this scheme - the Biel Tan paint guide is in White Dwarf Number 302; it's a terrific issue, well worth tracking down.
