Hi There,
This Blog is to help keep me on track to get more of my stuff painted. Primary goal is to complete squads to a little higher than tabletop standard. As things progress I may aim a little higher, but the sea of unpainted mini's currently says just get the job done.

This month I aim to paint two Dreadnoughts for my fledgling Dark Angels army:

Primed:

Basecoated:

Apologies for the poor quality pics, I will work on improving those.

Almost impossible to tell, but the first basecoat was VMA Olive Green, a really dark green. Will next add some yellow into the mix for some highlights.

Regards,
Andy

Put on 2 highlight layers of progressively lighter green. Mixed the VMA Olive Green with some VMA Yellow:

Basecoated the metallics, then oil washed and sealed with satin varnish:

On to some base coats for the smaller details next.

Made some decent progress on the dreadnoughts:

Made some mistakes with accuracy and also should have done the top highlight on the smoke stacks before washing with Seraphim Sepia - the other two golds have transitioned quite nicely after the wash.

Mostly done now, just got to finish the scroll work then onto the finishing touches of decals, chipping and weathering - haven't done chipping and weathering before so that will be interesting.

Finished the scroll work on the dreads. I'm waiting on decals from GW (should be here by Wednesday) as I realised that I couldn't paint the company symbols freehand.

While waiting, I've done some more work on my stretch goal for this month - a squad of tactical marines. Just need to finish purity seals and add a wash to darken the bases and these will be at the same stage as the dreads (exception being the Sergeant who needs a little more work).

Decals, chipping, weathering, varnish & grass tufts to complete.

Not sure about the previous pics, but these were all taken from closer in macro mode. Adjusted the lights a little as well. Oops! Looks like Reavsie Jr forgot about the angles. Presume you mean like on a 45 degree rotation so parts of the model are further away, rather than all straight on?

Dark Angels dreadnoughts now complete after decals, chipping and weathering. I'm pretty happy with the chipping, less so with the weathering. I'll need more practice to get finer lines rather than thick splodges!

Thanks Miss Dee

Next up are Deathwing Terminators. A quick update from the painting table, have basecoated and laid down 1st highlight layer today:

Basecoated with VMA Mahogany:

1st highlight with VMA Mud Brown:

They are looking a little dark at the moment. I have 2 more highlight layers to do on the armour, so hope they lighten up enough.

Haven't tried P3. I'm transitioning from GW to VMA after struggling with thinning paints. Really steep learning curve with the airbrush, so have been switching over to save my sanity. Only got the basic paint set and a handful of others so far.

Have just ordered VMA Sand for the final highlight as it is the closest to Bleached/Ushabti Bone in that range.

Reavsie

Were turning out way too dark, so have based these again with VMA Sand:

Will need to add a couple of highlight layers with a Sand/White mix then an oil wash. Not particularly happy with these so far. The Sand paint was much thinner than previous layers and I've ended up with some splodges of paint in places. I have another unit to do so will add some Liquitex Airbrush Medium as I think that will actually thicken it up a little and not spray on so "wet", which I think is the cause of the splodges. Tried high and low air pressure, but still ended up with the splodges, where the previous layer had gone on very smoothly.

The joys of airbrush work!

Thanks Miss Dee. I'm hoping they'll turn out okay.

I'm down in Dartford, Kent.

I am a little nervous about the Ravenwing. I see the grey drybrush and black wash mentioned quite frequently, but it's not something I've done on a flat surface before, so I've kind of been putting it off. With Dark Vengeance and the Ravenwing Battle Force, I won't be able to put it off forever!

Quick update after an oil wash and seal with varnish:

Only did the one Sand/White highlight layer in the end as I still found the paint too watery to get fine layers without pooling.

Next step is to block out the other base colours.

Very nice - keeping my eye on these now.

Have done some more work on blocking out the other base colours. Boltgun metal and Mechrite Red. Have finished the chest eagles. Taking quite some time as there is so much detail on these DV mini's:

Mostly, on my phone.

Looking great so far! May I give a little advice with decals? Brush a little varnish over the edges once applied to seal them and hide the edges. Then, when you varnish the whole thing, the edges should disappear altogether!

Thanks for the advice - I have put one layer of varnish over them. Will add another on the final seal. Will probably put a slit in the kneepad ones as the area is just a little small for the decal.

I've spent way too much time and effort trying to get the airbrush to work properly, so it's now on the naughty stair while I'm back to using brushes.

Quick update on where I am now:

Have primed a Ravenwing Battleforce and Terminator Chaplain.
In addition to the 6 Deathwing Terminators that I still have details to finish, I am working on these:

2 squads of Tactical Marines - basecoated and first highlight layer on armour.
1 squad of Tactical Marines - just needs a few details finishing.
9x Terminators - basecoated and shaded.
