Forge world is being rumoured to start doing hobbit/lotr kits. This jas come around with GW not being able to produce a smaug model due to their agreement with new line cinema that all models must be of right likelyness and scale. Other models rumoured to be done are the necromancer, sauron and even terrain.

Note this is just rumours at the moment.

If anyone could pull off a large model it would be them. I was just talking to a friend of mine a few days ago wondering when Forge World is going to make another large kit like the Thunderhawk or Manta.

Honestly though I bet GW's Smaug looked good, but it was probably way too small. To make it the scale New Line wanted you would have had to make it four feet long probably...

Yea it probably did but it would have to be about the size of two realms of battle tiles what is to big for them.

I really hope not, because between producing this stuff for games noone is playing and an endless line of space marines for 30k, I fear we'd see the fantasy lines and the xenos lines go almost non-existent.

And nothing since.

Realistically, the reason why Smaug was not made is because of the size and the fact that anyone who has seen the movie can tell you that despite the title of "Desolation of Smaug"? There was not really any "fighting" Smaug.

This.

The hobbit has got to be a money losing project, right? They can't be making as much off of it as they would a Necron IA book with models, right?

Surely this just ties into the new combo Store front due this year and FW taking over on all current finecast kits.

If all the FW rumors are true, they will be quite busy...

I'd be quite upset but seeing as Black Fire pass was put on hold for yet more marine variants (let's have the studs and rivers on the back of the armour this month, lads!) I'm not too upset.

Fantasy, Xenos and terrain seem to have been forgotten about for the most part at FW for the moment and seeing as The Hobbit is mostly Finecast (along with FW's taking over FC production) this seems a natural progression.

It'll be interesting to see how FW cope, don't cope all the same

I wouldn't be so sure about FW doing the entire Hobbit range but I would not be surprised at the sculpt for Smaug coming from them because Trish Carden works for FW now and she does most of their huge beasties. It also makes more sense to do it in resin because given GW's price for plastic models they would sell comparatively few and as a resin model cast in house they can cope with the demand or lack thereof better. I think next year will be more telling for this line as that is when we will see the battle of the five armies. Ive been put off by the Desolation of Smaug book because they wrote a dumbass scenario calling for 18 spiders which come as 2 for £22.

Um, wouldn't Smaug be like 4-5 feet long in scale? I don't think that's gonna happen guys, not according to New-line's rules anyhow...

3' with some small change I think. Hardly bigger than the biggest kits in FW catalogue.

Apparently smaug will be the size of a manta.

About right. Manta has a 34" wingspan.

Heck, I'd buy a good Smaug kit for the price of a Manta. He really was the best thing in the Hobbit so far (and I say that as someone who enjoyed the previous movie quite a lot).

Yeah that was the suggestion I believe, still a rumour of course, but its supposed to tie into the also rumoured redesign of the GW website.

Sounds like heinous fethory and I for one am getting tired of other stuff getting in the way of more LR variants!

I mean really! When was the last time FW did a new LR varient!
Or Chimera!

Unless they decide the dwarves ride out in chimera from the wood elves I don't want to see any FW hobbit crap.

Now that would be a real chase scenario!

Hadn't heard this rumour, sounds great to me, I've only had problems with two FW kits out of dozens, and in both cases they went out of their way to help me(in one case, they sent me an entirely new kit because of one missing part).

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

I think you can expect FW to focus on 30k models at the expense of just about everything else since the range is wildly popular.

I dont expect much fantasy product to be released in the foreseeable future, sadly.

I HATE it when people say this. The desolation of smaug refers to the area that smaug burned down NOT to him dying.

But that's impossible.

Finecast was specifically made to work with the old metal-spin-cast molds.

Forge World resin doesn't work with spin cast molds. It's just good ol' slow-hardening resin you pour into pressure molds.

If a miniature that is currently made with a spincast-mold (i.e. Finecast) were to be "ported" to Forge World's material, they'd have to make a completely new mold for it.
