The new starter set for warhammer fantasy 9th edition set to be released this summer will contain orcs and goblins and empire. The set will contain mounted riders for empire and gunners. Night goblins and orcs with a river troll for O & G. There is set to be around 50 models in this set with more than said here.

Note this is from a good source though the models content is not tor definite.

Be nice if true. Always could use more O&G. OK I lie, I dont use 3/4 of what I have now lol. Hope 9th doesnt invalidate existing army books.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

I hope it does because at this point the only thing that is going to save WHFB is to rebuild it from the ground up. Of course this isn't going to happen.

Empire Vs O&G is safe(ish) bet as they are the flagship WHFB armies. 50 models seems very low for an Empire AND O&G force.

50 models would also be the smallest starter set ever wouldn't it? I think the next smallest is either 6th edition (empire vs orcs) or 8th edition (skaven vs HE), which was about 70 models IIRC.

on the forum. Obviously

Fifty each, or fifty in total?

Fifty in total sounds puny for gobbos and empire.

It would be like, 20 gobbo infantry, 20 human infantry and 10 of whatever they are trying to push.

Hell, I managed to find a 5th ed box set, and there was like 88 figures advertised. Granted I found it at a garage sale so I really got more like 60, but that's still more than what is supposed to be in this new box.

Obviously as with any rumour I take with expected caution, but 50 models seems small aye, depends if one of them is a Orc on a Wyvern for example.

GW are bringing down model count with prices either staying or rising lately. So this even though rumoured wouldnt surprise.

Would be excited for more Empire stuff, especially knights in the vein of the Dark Vengeance chosen (in terms of posing and detail).

Do we know that we're even getting a new edition? I dare not enter the quagmire of rumor tracking threads...

Which wouldn't be as bad if they didn't keep requiring the same/more of them to make more sales. 10 figures for like $40 is bad enough, and doubly so when you need 20 figures to make a decent-sized unit.

Interesting rumour, though 15 gobbos truly is pitiful when you think a typical gobbo regiment can end up at 40-50 models. If they are as high quality as I.o.b, then I think I'll bite, unless of course they have tripled the price...

Perhaps they're re-working the rules to work at a more detailed, skirmish level game with fewer troop numbers that's then adaptable to more large scale battles?

Maybe? Naaah!

Maybe they're trying to make the whole getting started experience a little less intimidating?

I know when I started with Fantasy by buying the Skull-Pass set that had over a 100 minis for $45 (all of 5 years ago) I was a bit overwhelmed with the enormity of the task in front of me.

You just need to buy 5 copies of the starter box to have two playable armies!

Seriously though, as someone sitting on a ton of Empire stuff this is still appealing as I can integrate everything in to my 20 year spanning models easily.
No big centerpiece models is a bit lame though.

Guess, GW finally figured out why Fantasy sales have been sinking so dramatically: Prices were too low! So they decided to do what saved Hobbit sales: Double the prices

BTW, these rumours remind me of what Tim posted on faeit212 last November:

Why river trolls? Surely the smarter bet would be to make basic trolls/ stone trolls so as to impact on the sales of the good looking river troll models?

I dont mind bringing model count down, i just hope we dont go back to the days of 6th and 7th, where all that mattered was who was the killiest turn 1 and second who got the charge, the rest might as well not have been there.

The rumor goes along with a general revamp of Fantasy in general i have heard. There is a general recognition how you have to field many models for nominal use. I am nobody with no authority. But i have been paying attention to my local owner who has been spot on with 6th ed rumors for 40k and has been saying "hypothetical" things about a fantasy revamp.

I am looking forward to 9th.

Would love getting the model count down. I'd prefer if they got away from the strict representation (do I have 22 dudes or 27?) and went more abstract, like Kings of War or a bajillion historical systems: units are skirmish, small, medium or large (more or less 10/20/30), and the focus is on base sizes and not on # of dudes.

And then truly big units (40-50+ dudes) are limited - things like Goblins, Skaven, and Zombies - and get special "Horde" rules.

Or they could have a system where everybody takes either massive blocks of sucky troops or super-powered death stars; tons of war machines to kill any monster that threatens; and then first one to get off Black Horror wins.

They could also do that.

I'd welcome this news, but we had a thread last week saying the new edition was going to be in 2015 instead. Only one can be true, seemingly... although maybe a consolidated 40k rulebook (6.1) could release the same year as fantasy... or maybe the 6.1 rumor wasn't true (or was misunderstood).

The problem I have with this rumour is that nothing is said about the source other than it is "good".

Now depending on your personal opinion a good source to you could be a source that I dont find to be remotely credible. Is the source a gamer friend, independent store owner, a redshirt or someone that works in nottingham? No clue is given and so it is not possible to evaluate this rumour except in the context of the really good secrecy that GW manages to keep its upcoming releases cloaked under.

I dont expect the OP to jeopardize a source but more than just saying it is 'good" is needed to elevate the rumour above the category of spam.

The model count is also too low for me to put much faith in the rumour that it will be empire and green skins.

@Kroothawk, are those rumors you posted suggesting a "starter rulebook" hinting that GW may be axing the mini rulebooks with the full complement of rules from the starter boxes?

Because that would be a major blow to their value. Half the point in getting the box is so you can have a full rulebook that weighs less than 10 pounds.

I would be happy for it to invalidate old army books. I think trying to fit new rulesets in with old army books is too limiting and doesn't necessarily work great anyway. I'd be happy if every few editions they just buggered off the old army books and started fresh. It's been, what, 12 or 13 years since they last did that for Fantasy? IMO they definitely need to write a fresh ruleset for 40k that isn't hamstrung by the old codices, Fantasy less so, but still it wouldn't bother me if they did that.
