Hey dakka, the guys and I at the flgs and I decided to get into fantasy to get some variation from 40k, so what better way to start than an escalation league? Everyone starts with 500 points of there chosen army. ( no repeat armies!) Every three weeks we will add another 500 points. Every time we add points everything must be painted and based, so it will look really good:-) I chose skaven because they look awesome, so heres what Ive got done so far....

Wish I could but it's really hard to judge what a 500 pts list would need. Typically the best skaven stuff is the rare choices (except the plagueclaw catapults which suck balls) but you won't have much to field them. Like the most you could probably field in a 500 pts list is one warp lightning cannon but they are really good.

Core is usually alright but to be a jerk you may as well use skavenslaves (which are really good for their value). Take skavenslaves with no equipment except maybe a musician if you have a general or something nearby.

Weapons teams are alright (except the doom flayer which also sucks). I'd tell you to take them but sadly without something to back your units up they fall pretty hard. One strategy I have is to throw small slave units at the enemy and fall back fairly close to my army. I then throw the enemy out of position and usually have a good warpfire thrower shot at them. Warpfire throwers can be pretty sick.

Sorry I just don't play 500 pts battles much. I suppose on the bright side if you face cavalry or monstrous infantry you won't fight too many.

You should probably want a bit of melee hitting power so without the ability to field an abomination yet you might want to throw some rat ogres or even some plague censers into the mix. Remember they are frenzied so you may want a little shooting or a BSB to hold them back.

Giant rats are probably more cost effective than 20 model slave blocks for chaff (unit re-direction and artillery killing shenanigans) though you might not need much except to force the enemy to run around and get out of position or slowly go forward.

You may need some poisoned wind mortars too for possible cavalry killing though that might not help enough. If you face cavalry it's more important to deploy on an extended front and then to find a way to flank the cavalry once they're done charging.

It's probably likely that you'll face some light cavalry which may need ratling guns to deal with.

Once again it's just so hard to think up a good list for you but i'll try if I have the time.

------------------

Btw I couldn't help but notice you're also in Michigan. Are you anywhere near Pontiac? The most local stores I've gone to are 'Pop, Caffeine and gaming' and the last GW left in Michigan.

I don't know if I have time to throw up a decent list for you and it might not even be good if I gave you the advice. If you want some advice ask warpsolution if he/she is still around.

Thanks for the advice, and yeah i already discovered the rediculousness of hoarding naked slaves (that sounds terrible) ill try to throw in a warp cannon.

I'm pretty sure that's way too far away. If you're ever down by the GW store give me some notice though. I'm up there most Saturdays.

Ok so it's probably not the best list but here's what I came up with at 500 pts.

------------

Chieftain (general)

45 pts

Chieftain
-bsb

70 pts

Slaves x20
-musician

42 pts

Slaves x20
-musician

42 pts

rat ogres x4
-packmasters x2

176 pts

clanrats x25
-shields
-musician
-standard

125 pts

----------------------------

I'm having second thoughts about this list but it might do ok. I decided you could use a 2nd chieftain instead of a warlord as a leader because it's probably more cost effective at this points limit. I'm not sure if the slaves should be in two units but I figure this would be better if you needed to flank with said slave units. That said you might want to go with units of 25 slaves or over 20 slaves and run them in units of 5 if this is the case. The rat ogres are the punching unit and they should do ok against most armies except maybe elves. I figure magic won't do a whole lot yet. The BSB is probably going to be needed for the rat ogres considering the frenzied tests they'll have to do.

I could have gone for censer bearers but considering all the island of blood you have you probably have a lot closer to this anyway. The rat ogres should probably try to engage against units they're faster than but I have a feeling you should do ok against most low points armies. I can't exactly go out there and command the battles for you.

Keep your units 5 models wide max for the start. I figure wizards should just be out of this list till you get a bigger list like 750-1,000 pts. Magic is very out there anyway.

I dunno how good of a list this will be. I don't play 500 pts very much.

I really like the poison wind mortar, it can be really effective - if it hits, that is. A doomrocket can be useful too.

~1200 pts

*poison wind mortar explodes* "Oh well. At least I tried."

Well it's not like you're very slave heavy in my list in ways. I mean you could drop rat ogres in my list and replace them with slaves and you get a bajillion dudes in 500 pts. Not to mention units of 20-25 models each is not the most annoying thing to do. If you really wanted to be annoying you'd field them 5 models wide and 8 to 10 ranks deep. Though that would make maneuvering hard.

My bigger problem is currently your leadership. Leadership is not like in 40k. It's much more flimsy in fantasy. You'll find yourself wanting to throw down a BSB even in a small game just for the leadership re-roll. That said a BSB can't go on your general so that'd be more points thrown into a hero or lord which you take as a general. It's your move though as it is your list.

@kingjayko: Weapons teams cost quite a bit and taking them out of a small point list would probably allow him more units to flank or charge with.
