Hello everyone,
Long time player, first time painter. I've had a HUGE force of nids that I need to get painted up and my concept is based on the picture below:
I am going to have access to an airbrush over the next few weeks. I've got most of my models primed black. With that said, I think basecoating with the airbrush will significantly speed up the painting process.
Any techniques I should use in order to attempt this sort of concept? I know that I can't have high expectations as I start, but looking at this model most of the depth comes from drybrushing?
I would be happy to take any comments!
PS: Cheers to the guy who painted this beautiful model (in case he sees my post) :-)

All I can say about painting is that VMC tastes much better than VMA... especially black...

Nice idea mate, you can make large pieces of jagged ice with a hot glue gun.

I've always had this idea of monstrous creatures having icicles on them, especially on the carapace. Don't know how you would go about. Maybe GS sculpting and paint it white.

I don't know if a hot glue gun can be used to make icicles?
I guess if you're talking about stalactite like shapes MAYBE.
What do you guys think about this as a prototype?? I'm not sold on the Brown for the weapon because I think it takes away from the "iceworld" theme I'm going for, but most of my army won't have weapons anyways, so it won't be very prevalent in the army on the table...
Automatically Appended Next Post: Let me know if you guys can see my attachment....it wasn't working for me initially.

Yes that was my general idea and yes you can make them you just need to make the peices of glue smaller as the icicle gets taller creating a rounded pyramid like structure.
I'll take a picture of my mates model. He has done some amazing icicles.

Any thoughts on my most recent prototype?
Obviously, I won't be able to match the colors EXACTLY, but I'd like to come close....
I'm really looking ideas for the brown...does it fit into the ice theme?

I'm not sure about hot glue for icicles. It doesn't take an excessive amount of heat to melt hot glue and ruin an otherwise beautiful model.
I think your prototypes colors are nice. You might also want to try a more white-oriented color scheme, as sort of a camouflage for ice worlds. Something using white for the carapace, and shades of light blue-grays for other parts of the model.

Thanks! Maybe, even though I've diverted (somewhat) from my original inspiration, I think the colors go well together, they contrast each other to present "the pop" to the model.
I'm still unsure on the brown, but I'm going to do a test model today and I'll post some pictures!

Always love to see "ice themed" armies.
Love the color scheme.
