Hey guys,

The World XEater here, I run A Painting and Modeling blog (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/549440.page) here on dakka I have just returned from a tournament hosted by my local GW store, being my first ever tournament I wanted to do a little report on the missions played, armies versed and battle results. The tournament was called HEAD COUNT and was comprised of 5 missions and 8 players with 1000pts each. Firstly I wanted to say the day was an obsolute blast! There were no WAAC spankers playing, It was a very chilled and friendly atmosphere. Now on to the armies!

ARMIES

There were 8 players in total, a very mixed bag with not many double ups at all. I cannot remember the lists 100% so we will just have to go by the pictures.

1. CHAOS SPACE MARINES - DAEMON ALLIES (My army)

2. IMPERIAL GUARD (death korps) (My Brother)

3. IMPERIAL GUARD (ogryns)

4. GREY KNIGHTS

5. CHAOS SPACE MARINES

6. TAU EMPIRE

7. IMPERIAL GUARD - BLOOD ANGELS ALLIES

8. SPACE MARINES (raven guard)

MISSIONS

There were 5 missions played over the day, each was a slight variation on a standard rulebook mission, the tournament organiser wrote in some additional funky rules to ensure everyone had fun and the games didnt get too serious, it worked fantastically as many of the additional rules were funny and random. Unfortunately being new rules nobody was used to using they were occasionally forgotten, other than that they were interesting and fun. Definitely missions I would like to olay again! on to the missions:

(I honestly have no idea why it has rotated these images i apologise)

Mission 1 – Scatterfields

Mission 2 – Thunderhawk Down

Mission 3 – Explosivo

Mission 4 – Time Warp

Mission 5 – Head Count

RESULTS

Game 1

Opponent - Tau Empire
Mission - Scatterfields
Result – Defeat
Comments - Fantastic game against a top bloke, the overwatch capacity of the Tau combined with his fireblade and ethereal giving everyone additional pulse rifle shots made it an uphill struggle for my Daemons, I severely underestimated his overwatch and was gunned down before getting into assault. My bloodthirster got instant death on his riptide thanks to the axe of khorne but other than that my assaults were quite lackluster. Tau won, holding more objectives at the end of turn 5.

Game 2

Opponent - Grey Knights
Mission - Thunderhawk down
Result - Defeat
Comments - This game was somewhat less fantastic, great opponent was a very cool dude to play against but his army proved just too powerful killing my bloodthirster in turn 1 and my Daemon princes in overwatch turn 2 completely screwed the game for me. I really felt the risk of putting all of your eggs in FMCs with this game. I don't think either of us really enjoyed the game as by turn 2 it was insanely obvious it was game over daemons. I wound up getting tabked on turn 5.

Game 3

Opponent - Imperial Guard - Bood angels allies
Mission - Explosivo
Result - victory
Comments - This really is where my luck did a 180. Great game against a fantastic opponent although I imagine he would have enjoyed it somewhat less than I did. with the majority of his strong shooting being blast weapons he simply lacked the ability to do any serious damage to my FMCs, by turn 2 I was behind his line wrecking up the place. This mission was my biggest victory of the day with a score of something like 18 - 0! I felt bad for winning by so much but I was quickly reminded of the 2 arse kickings I just recieved. This game was where I realized a FMC army (or any strongly themed list I guess) will generally do 1 of 2 things... 1 completely annihilate its opponent or 2 get completely annihilated. I actually really dislike that about the army I brought as for me the closer the game the more enjoyable.

Game 4

Opponent - Chaos Space Marines
Mission - time warp
Result - victory
Comments – this mission in particular contained special rules my opponent and I kept forgetting to do, we remembered part way through turn 3 so we let that turn finish and then started the extra mission rules turn 4. I guess the game may have played differently had we remembered the additional rules but we both had equal turns without it so I didn't mind. my FMCs performed very well in this game smashing his troops terminators and kharne with ease. Leaving a Heldrake and damaged land raider alive at the end of turn 5.

Game 5

Opponent - Raven guard Space Marines
Mission - head count
Result - defeat (hilarious defeat)
Comments - this game had to have one of the most WTF funny moments I have seen in a game of WH40K. Turn 1 my warlord with the black mace swoops up the field with my other FMCs beside him the enemy librarian casts hallucination on him and he black maces himself to death, then all of his 40 marines rip into the bloodthirster killing it outright. By the end of turn 1 my opponent was on 8 victory points and had wiped out over half of my army! Lets just say he knows how to roll 6s! I wasn't going down without a fight as my remaining Daemon prince avenged his brother killing the librarian warlord 2 dreadnoughts and a full tactical squad but was then gunned down by the surviving marines in the ensuing shooting and overwatch. All bloodletters were annihilated in overwatch and the cultists barely made it out of my deployment! I was tabled by turn 6 but it was still one of the most exciting games I have played in a long time! Great opponent abd a very cinematic game what a great way to finish the day!

OVERALL RESULTS AND SCORING SYSTEM

One of the things I loved about this tournament was the way scores were generated, it was dedigned to shift the focus from competitive gaming to sportsmanship and fun with players rating their opponents sportsmanship after each game. The score used to determine the rankings in the tournament was based on 3 things.
1 painting (max score 20pts)
2 sportsmanship (max score 50pts)
3 battle points (max score 50pts)
This way people who spent extra time on their armies and played more fun and less competitive were at an advantage. This took soo much pressure off of the games making for a much more enjoyable day.

I do not remember all of the placings but I do remember the top 3

1st place
Imperial guard (death korps) (my Brother)

2nd place
Imperial guard (ogryns)

3rd place

Equal between my Chaos and the Grey Knights

Im quite surprised at how highly I placed, I know my army was one of the better painted as some were missing bases, had minimal highlighting etc.

This sounds like a great format. How long was each game allotted to finish. And where you playing on normal 4'x6' tables? I might be borrowing some of these mission ideas.

@ kalashnachris Haha skulls were from a Discount retailer in their home decoration department.

@games were allowed an hour and a half, not a single game went into overtime, some finished within 45 minutes. They were 4x4 boards
