The Sergeant is my first attempt at flesh painting and eyes.

Suggestions for getting better skin?

Also, I'm aware I should do some edge highlights, but I'm scared.

Try using Reikand(sp?) flesh shade on the faces and it usually brings out the details and makes it look better.

They look pretty nice.
Quite hard to make out some of the detail, even some of the colour seems to have been lost in the photography.

I would suggest you just lay a white piece of paper or two under/behind them, will make it much much easier to see. But yeah, looks pretty good for a first finished squad!
