I don't like conversions, and not a huge fan of using other models as counts as... I like my units to be the units they were modeled to be. Anyone else feel this way?

Depends on the model, really.

Generally I'll use the official model, but I don't mind a cool Eldar kit-bash for Eldrad if it's done well. So long as the model has the right wargear and is the right size, I'm happy.

For things like Superheavy Tanks or Titans, I prefer the official model. It looks cool, and doesn't look like you and I are playing with Tonka Trucks and Barbie Dolls.

I don't like Counts As, but I do like a good conversion.
The key there is good conversion....

No. Not a bit. Nope not even close.

Conversions are amazing and show the real creativity and work that people put into this hobby. They should be encouraged and promoted.

Counts as can be annoying if its an entire army but using deathwing knights as th/ss terminators is not bad at all.

My thoughts exactly. Conversions just bother me, so do counts as. I like using the correct model, that's what makes it 40k to me. Like you said otherwise we're looking at Tonka trucks and barbie dolls...

...why? Some GW models are simply ugly, expensive or both. Examples such as GW Khymerae, they try to charge a ridiculous amount for them yet they are terrible models. Or Dark Eldar Wyches, while acceptable models, other companies 'cheap knockoffs' have look considerably better *example at bottom*. I simply can't understand why you would shoe horn yourself into using one companies models when you don't have to.

I'm just a purist at heart, same reason I own a Siberian Husky and didn't get a mutt. I like things to be 100% genuine.

Also, on a side note... Trying to read the "raging heroes" part of that package made me very angry... lol

So, you think white Alsatians are an abomination and will only accept 100% genuine black and tan Alsatians?

It's a German Shepard... And there are white germans that are pure bred. I would only get a pure bred dog, i.e. Siberian Husky, Golden retirever, German Shepard, all would have to be 100% and certified that way.

Oh dear, GW propaganda is spreading...

If it werent for other companies making amazing models at amazing prices I would not be here. GW models are very bland a lot fo the time. Plus who wants to play like 10 identical armies.

Counts as is fine but I use non GW guardsmen as guardsmen I wouldnt class that as counts as at all.

In short.

I. Strongly. Disagree.

Imgaine... Cadian, after cadian, after cadian, after cadian, after cadian, forver.... ever.... ever.... ever.

Other companies make great models because GW simply cant do them all and do them all well.

abomination is a bit of a strong word which he didn't use himself. Everyone is allowed to have their own pet peeves and apparently plagiarism is this persons. We don't have to understand him but we don't have to vilify him either.

How do you feel about painting armies in your own colors rather than in the colors of GW's factions? That's pretty much the same thing when you think about it.

Does anyone else remember when GW pushed conversions and had conversion guides and tips in some older codexes?

They are the right size, painted decently, and I can tell what their war gear is. I'd play against these.

My GW guardsmen consists of a squad of Steel Legion and a squad of Tallarns, with a handful of Last Chancer and Tanith models in the mix to bring up the numbers. :p

Oh, I do have a Cadian medic, thinking about it. Old metal one. Don't use him - Dorden and my Hospitaller are much better models.

Anyway, my point was that the Kennel Club does not recognise white German Shepherds (Alsatians) as legitimate and will not allow them to be registered as pedigree. By Daly's own comparison, recognising a white Alsatian as legitimate is just as bad as recognising a Kromlech ork as a legitimate model.

Hang on.... I think you need to be slowly reintroduced into the modelling society after years of indoctrination

I pity you.

No creativity. No Flavour. Nothing besides a splatter of paint to make your army different to the one next to you. In a setting where anything goes, vast unexplored lore, so much classified information, time jumps, secret organisations, limitless xenos and 99% of stories untold and yet you limit yourself to the small amounts of models GW produces without fully looking into why the setting was made the way it was...

For all to create and change as they please and fit into the story. For that guy to put boobs on his guard, for that marine to use heresy armour in 40k, for the eldar player to make exodites, for tau to use human allies and the possibilities are endless.

I pity you.

The kennel club doesn't recognize alsatians at all. They're german shepards. Also, kinda a bad example as I have 2 Siberian huskies and wouldn't get any other breed. Alsatians are just what they're called in certain countries, it doesn't necessarily refer specifically to white germans...

Im fine with that, my eldar where all meant to be traditional shrine colours. I just dont understand how you dont like other people converting and so forth. Thats the main issue. It should always be encouraged and praised. Just like a paintjob (box or not). But just remember the praetorian guard (the army I have) only exist because of a conversion someone did. If everyone had your mindset I wouldnt have those models I have (despite them not being GW). Thats just one example.

But yea you are free to do as you wish just remember there are a lot of people who put a lot of effort into making their models unique (through commission, or plain talent) so give them their due praise. Dont frown upon it. Modelling is like the only thing the majority of players can actually agree on. A good model is a good model. A good paint job is a good paint job. A great idea is a great idea. Embrace the best aspect of the hobby. At least for other players.

As a Praetorian Guard player I'd be hard pressed to have a contemporary Guard army without utilizing proxying and the counts-as rule. While there are some poorly executed conversions out there I think flat out dismissing any conversions or proxies out of hand is rather limiting. If that is what floats your boat, more power to you, but I do not understand that mindset.

Here are some of my proxies. From L to R we have Gunnery Sgt. Harker, a Priestess, Guardsman Marbo, and Ironhand Straken.

If someone refused to play me because of these figures I'd laugh in their face.

I'm just curious how strict the OP takes this. I mean, some models don't strictly exist, but can easily be kitbashed, like bike HQs. If one was a true purist, one would have to build every model such that all of its parts came from that box. If it's a Devastator, every last piece must have been in the Devastator box. No bits mixing with other kits, no custom shoulder pads. That would be true purist modelling.

Genuine? Purist? Official? The way it's supposed to be?

Oh, kids these days.

I used to have a hobby called 40k. This hobby had its own magazine called White Dwarf. This magazine had hobby articles in it. One of these articles showed you how to make rules for your own vehicles. Another one of these articles showed you how to make that vehicle from deodorants and balsa wood.

But hey, I get it. You're young. You want your stuff to be exactly like everyone else's stuff. You know, so you won't stand out.
