The first part of a many part thread of my painting of my Imperial Knight.

I have only ever finished 1 squad of Sternguard before this, and about 2 test models for my IG so this is kind of a huge undertaking.

The top shell has since had a Nuln Oil Wash on it with no additional layers aside for the Primer, Base coat, and 2 layers of Runefang Steel and Runelord Brass. The top shell alone has taken me about 3 hours.

Plan is to drybrush the Runefang Steel onto the mechanical bits on the rear, and then detail work the armor plates, face, weapons etc over the next few days.

Hoping to have it done by Thursday which is our local hobby shops 40k night.

Status update:

Wash done on top shell, dry brushed the legs behind the plates (Then washed after the picture was taken, then started working on the models (From its perspective) left hand side

I feel like I'm making progress!!! Still more washes to do to darken the dry brushed metal more. since I lathered it on kind of thick to be honest.

Also, thanks.

They are on actuators that raise them above the blade.

Are you finding it hard to reach under the armor plating? I haven't glued on certain parts of the armor yet but I want to so it looks complete... =(

The gaps in the back are't too bad, I was able to get my brushes in there, albeit it detail brushes instead of an actual dry brush, but all in all not extremely difficult. I regret gluing the torso on though, it's making some things moderately difficult.

Also, it's super grimdark, and everything is better with more grimdark.

Heraldry left, but I'm terrified to free hand it on there.

HALP!

For the heraldry - Harkonnen has a pretty simple graphic logo, this rams head device:

It's simply enough and there's enough space that you could print this out and cut out a template to paint with. Maybe do the ram's head on one side, with the chevrons on the other? This makes the head larger, which makes it easy to template.

Digging the fancy photoshop, but I planned on doing Hyperion, but I like the idea of creating my own custom heraldry.

Also, Harkonnen? :( Atreides for life.

is there a reason your not using the transfers included with the model? Top right hand corner under the name tag "Mortis and Lactites

Because the transfer sheet doesn't contain the House Hyperion Heraldry, which is a Red Stripe, White Stripe, then Red Stripe, with 3 Crescent moons along the center white line.

To be fair they are very similar.

Oh right, lolsies @ Hyperion - must have misread that.

Still, a House Harkonnen one would be pretty cool... Evil, but cool.

Looking good so far. I like the black and red Knights, I'll probably do something similar myself.

Can't help you a lot on the freehand. Though it is a pretty simply design, maybe use masking tape to show only the white band, do the crescent moons with a pen, if you don't like them just keep retrying until you get what you like, then move the masking tape outwards to do the yellow bands.

The thin black line is going to be hard to do neatly, I'd consider using a pen and masking tape. Use the masking tape as a guide to get a straight line.
