Hi guys,

currently I'm painting my weirdboy (which is quite fun) but I've got some issues with painting his staff and the orbs.

I would like to create some osl and i've been trough all of the tutorials, but I don't know hot to start on a round surface.
Any tips or tuts which I didn't read or watched?

Help would be much appreciated.

Look at this orb:

and this one (note: NOT my picture, just googled poison wind globadier)

You've got the darkest colour at the very 'bottom' (as far as an orb has one of those), most of the orb is different mid-tones finishing off with the brightest colour in a similarly small amount as the darkest.

Blending from your base colour to a much brighter/paler blue on the top part of the orb would be the best way of doing it. Alternatively some very gradual layering would work.similarly. wash it blue afterwards to tie things together better and you're sorted. A dead easy way of getting your different blues is to add a very pale grey (vallejo ghosty grey for example) to the base colour.

With your model I would leave the bits closest to the staff the darkest.

Quick and dirty way to do glowing orbs: Basecoat it some bright color, neon green or yellow or even just white. Put a drop or two of an ink wash on one tip of it. Put drops of a different ink wash on the other side. Get a toothpick or something and spread the wash across on both sides, and carefully swirl them together so they don't mix, but make striations. When it dries it'll look like you're some hotshot blending superstar and all the ladies will want you.

Thank you guys.

Badablack, this sounds very much like the effect I want to achieve. ;-)

I'm going to paint the ball tonight.

So, it didn't turn out the way I wanted but it's ok for now.

Thing that defines OSL is the surrounding 'halo' effect that is reflected by the things next to it. A glowing object is bright, so it's near white - the 'halo' is a step or two darker and fades out (gets darker) away from the object. You paint the halo on the physical parts that touch it - yet, in this case, there's not too many things touching the orb.

In the pics, the Poison WInd Globadier is missing the halo on his hand, and also from around the globe on his belt. On the Ork Psyker, I'd suggest making the orb closer to white, then putting a light blue - dark blue on the copper rings of the staff next to the orb. Of you want the whole staff to emit light, then you'd also paint it on the hand, arm etc.
