You are being harsh on yourself but since I am thinking alike when it comes down to painting my staff I will try to tip and trick and trick and tip and so on.
You have probably undercoated the mini with black which although it helps metallics a lot it dulls bright colors significantly. The red is flat and needs highlighting up to three stages would be grate (a brighter red, an orange, and on the tips a little golder yellow).
The gold is bright but also needs highlighting with some short of silver. The helmet looks great so leave it alone

. You need to paint the gemstones (I suggest blue or green to contrast with the rest of the red). Using darker metallics or silver mixed with black you can shade the opposite portions of the sword creating a
NMM effect with the use of metallics. Using the line that runs in the middle of the sword darken one side of the sword near the hilt and near the tip and the other side near the middle. If done correctly it give a nice effect to the blade.
I can see a lot of slopes in the the color, gold color on the armor near the foot, face paint on the helmet but I guess you will tidy this up.
Face cries out for some highlights.
Turn the mini around and take a picture of the back of the model so I can tip and trick you some more

.
