An "active shooter" has been reported at the Texas Army base that was the site of a mass shooting in 2009 that left 13 soldiers dead and another 32 wounded.

A shelter in place order has been issued for the Fort Hood military base, US media report.

The shooting is said to have occurred at the Carl R Darnall Army Medical Center, located on the base.

Emergency crews are reportedly at the scene.

FBI press officer Michelle Lee told the BBC the agency and local police had responded to the report of a shooting, but did not have any information on how many people may have been shot.

"We are treating this as an active situation," she said.

Maj Nidal Hasan was sentenced to death last September over the 2009 shooting rampage at the same facility.

He claimed he opened fire at the army base to protect Taliban insurgents from US troops who were about to deploy to Afghanistan.

I hope this doesn't turn out like the last one. Thoughts go to anyone with family or friends in the area.

so far they have ruled out a 2nd shooter. they are thinking just one shooter as of 1828 US central time

Not confirmed but word is one dead. unknown if shooter or victim/standbyer. Seems Soldier on Soldier being the incident in a motor pool.

Heard a shooter was neutralized, possibility of another shooter.

Edit: But they seemed to have ruled that out now.

Report is that the shooter is dead but they are still treating this as an active situation. I haven't seen anything about if the shooter is military, veteran, or civilian.

Fingers crossed for it to have been a dressed up paintball gun, and all the victims to just be people with really dark senses of humour? That would be the ideal here, but sadly I doubt we'll have that much look. Poor people.

Negative Hordini. His name was mention earlier today on Fox. I found out his NoK has not been notified about his death from the Four Star giving the brief to the press just now. Out of respect and common sense I removed his name.

Four month in Iraq
Self turn in for TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury)
Not in the WTU. Warrior Transition Unit or Wounded Warrior unit
Was being envaluated for PTSD or starting to but its like a 6-8 month process
Was on meds
Was a 45 S&W he used

He is married. I've a feeling the first guy he killed was his wife current/former lover. That's the only thing I can think of for him to go off the mental reservation for.

Very well. I'm surprised they mentioned his name on the news before the families were notified. That's in pretty poor taste.

I think the news folks were given his name by a source, not told anything about next of kin, and reported what they had.

You see... this is what I don't get...

I've only ever been on base once... and I know, by policy, all bases are "gun-free" zone.

Why?

I'm mean, I understand that you may not want everyone carrying their rifles everywhere... but, why not carry your side arm?

We obviously trust our armed service men/women when they're out on missions.

Shouldn't there be an Armoury of some sort that if an attack happens, these servicemen can arm themselves, and go after the shooter?

It's just an odd policy to me... but, I'd submit that those who've been in the military may have a better explaination.

Guns are outlawed on all federal installations. Actually weapons are outlawed on Fed installations. Can't even have a pepper spray keychain or a stun gun.

Been this way for decades.

As to the 'why?' Ask your congress critters to give you a good answer. I can't give you one.

I think the point is to try to prevent thing like this. People trained to kill, possibly with PTSD, depression, ect. Not the best combo. Although this policy hasn't seemed to work out very well.

Okay, again, this applies to all federal installations. Not too many postal workers or FDA workers and IRS agents are 'trained to kill' and suffering from PTSD.
