Considering the popularity of crowdfunded projects involving minis and wargaming through Indiegogo, this is especially relevant.

Original guarantee:
Indiegogo has a comprehensive fraud-prevention system to protect our users. All campaigns and contributions go through a fraud review, which allows us to catch any and all cases of fraud. If we find fraudulent contributions on your campaign, we may remove them from your campaign Funds and Fulfillment pages. We may also ask you for more information, if we determine your campaign to be a high fraud risk. Finally, all campaigns that raise money go through a final examination before any funds are disbursed.

This was done after evidence of a $1M fraudulent project

For those thinking of using Indiegogo to host a project or those supporting a project on Indiegogo, caveat emptor.

Do note that Indiegogo charges your money the moment you pledge and not when the project successfully ends.

Yeah, I've never really got on with Indiegogo because they charge you straight away.

Indiegogo is like the Detroit of crowd funding.

It's just a bad neighborhood.

Well, Kickstarter had a campaign by Defiance Games, which was obviously fraudulent to all people familiar with that company. Still, 686 people backed this and lost 46k US$.

Well, that was Torn Armour's fault for making them bankrupt, Tony Reidy had no choice.

I wonder if this applies retroactively?

Anyone expect the AoW indiegogo to be fully delivered before 2020?

I guess if you wait long enough your backers start to die of illness or old age and you don't have to deliver anymore.

Well, Indiegogo doesn't charge you immediately... Paypal does.

Funny enough, one of the most common complaints for Kickstarter is the fact they don't use Paypal. Though if Kickstarter would, they'd have to charge immediately too.

And yeah, plenty of scams on Kickstarter.

Kickstarter wrote:Kickstarter does not guarantee projects or investigate a creator's ability to complete their project. On Kickstarter, backers (you!) ultimately decide the validity and worthiness of a project by whether they decide to fund it.”

They also pull campaigns that are complained about from the website even after they are funded

so if you've not kept contact details etc you may not even be able to get in touch with the project creator

(this happened to the 'troubled' Otherworld Indiegogo project which disappeared for several days, before re-appearing after the investigation was over

Somewhere in south-central England.

I am afraid that fraud is an inherent hazard in situations where someone asks you for money in return for a promise of something in the future.

It is clearly not exclusive either to Kickstarter or Indiegogo, nor is it limited to crowd funding as opposed to direct funding or bank funding.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
