Ok, so I practiced for hours on sheets of paper to get a solid gemstone effect. I think I've pretty well figured it out.

Let me know what you think of this gemstone on the chest of my Wraithknight...

I'm not sure whether or not I should gloss coat the gemstone.

Or maybe use the green shade to blend it a little more?

Also, the model is obviously not done. I know the rest of it is drybrushed sloppy.

Your gem stone looks great. I'd add a touch of gloss coat to it and I think you will be golden.

Gloss that beast up and rock'n'roll! Seriously nice job.

If that's your first crack at it on a model, you've done 40,000 times better than I did. Hell, I still can't make it look this good. I want to say you should gloss it but part of me thinks you shouldn't. The way its painted simulates reflected light, while adding a gloss coat will add another dimension of reflection that could disrupt the intended purpose of the painted gem. If it were up to me, I'd keep it how it is; it has a lot of depth and is successful in portraying a shiny stone without the use of gloss varnish.

Very nice work! I usually mess them up.

For the decision of wether to add a gloss coat to it, I want to share a WIP pic on which you can see a bunch of wraithknight gems.
Spoiler:

I did the chest gem on the left first, and I'm quite happy with that, the gems on the knight on the right are a mess by comparison. Yet, they still look good thanks to a coat of Tamiya clear red, which is also great for blood effects. ;-]

I glossed the faceplate, so I think I'm gonna leave the gem unglossed for now. I want the faceplate to stand out and the gloss is the only thing making that happen.

That gemstone looks amazing! I think if you gave the model a coat of matte and then picked the gem out with gloss it would look even better!
