Looking to buy a pin vise set. Mainly to magnetize some tau that I will be assembling. Does anyone have any thoughts on the one below? I could probably find cheaper, but this one comes with an awful lot of drill bits. Anyone have any specific comments, or does it look decent?

Thanks!

My only comment...is I wish I bought that one instead of the one I got.

Make sure to mark the bit you use somehow so you remember which one it is as well, otherwise trying to match sizes again at a later date can suck.

Nice variety there but if you are drilling for magnets then something that will do 2-3mm (or bigger?) is in order.

Me I have a pin vice (for pinning usually) but for magnetising I use a Tamiya Hobby drill. It's the best tool I ever bought and a fun model kit in itself.

Glad you mentioned the size. It looks like 2mm is the highest it goes. What size magnets do you think for something like a crisis suit, or even for a SM Dreadnaught?

You can get mixed drill bits pretty cheap pretty much anywhere.

These are what I use after trying many kinds that just did not work well:

My list of ones I own that I really do not like...

And this is what I want to get as the ultimate set:

For magnetizing, I suggest that you pick up 3-4 pin vises and a scribe.

The scribe is used to make an initial dimple at the point you want to drill. The advantage of this is that you can make the dimple, see if it's centered, and adjust if needed.

The 3-4 pin vises hold bits of increasing size, ending with a the largest bit you'll be using. I suggest multiple pin vises, because constantly changing out bits will drive you crazy. Much easier to have all of your tools laid out and run through them in sequence.

Oh yes, the reason for the smaller bits, it to make pilot holes for the larger bits. You'll have better control and make more accurate holes if you go small to big, vs. diving in with the largest bit first.
