I've been working on the concept for this army for a while so I guess I wanna start there. I've always imagined Iron Warriors being selfish and godless technophiles who have a distrust for daemonic creatures and psychic powers believing them to be unreliable at best and perversions of the perfection of machinery at worst. They are however quite willing to harness and exploit daemons to use them as components in their war machines as this requires no daemonic pact but rather is an enslavement and often utter destruction of something they find all together unsavory. In modelling terms this means no goop of chaos as the IW would likely remove any taint and replace it with robotic components. Any and all greenstuff I use is going to be very carefully done as to no fall into this easy shortcut that people tend to use to make the models seem more chaotic. Given their technology obsession the IW have allied themselves with fallen scions of Mars, The Dark Mechanicus, as they are the only ones who can sate their hunger for diabolical machines of destruction. The Dark Mechanicus are Adeptus Mechanicus members driven away for their heretical practices and disregard for the teachings of the false machine god Omnissiah. They have awoken to the truth that the true machine god is the Void Dragon, a C'tan trapped by the Emprah eons ago. Because they worship a C'tan the Dark Mechanicus are not bound by the silly laws that the machine cult of the empire of man. They freely study alien technology using it to enhance their mechanisms of destruction. They regularly use daemons essence as fuel for the furnaces that runs the blasphemous forges that their home world is literally covered in. They revel in creating soulless sentient machines to imitate the power of the Void Dragon and to spit in the faces of the cult of machines. It is even rumored that they may have a shard of a c'tan being used as a limitless power source which could explain the eerie green glow many of their creations have.

Now that that's out of the way let's talk about modelling! I really like the idea of incorporating necron elements into the models to reinforce the connection to the c'tan the dark mechanicus has so many models have necron components (spines mostly). The marines I use are the Iron pattern from forgeworld, gorgeous kit and super easy to cast (sorry gw, maybe drop your prices to where a guy working 50 hrs a week at a decent paying factory can afford them and maybe I wouldn't have to make forgeries) the guns and backpacks I'm using are mostly standard chaos stuff. The heads are varied but the most interesting ones are the ones from the Iron kit that I put horns on. Every model is custom. Not a single thing has all it's components from one kit. I love custom armies and I had a vision of what IW should be (which is prolly completely different than GW) since I was 14 and made my first super cheesy oblit and basilisk army that stomped some serious tail. Now let's get to the pics shall we?

This guy is one of the first marines I worked on for the army. You might notice his head is a cleaned up Nurgle champ head from the chaos box. The gun and back pack are from SM devastators and the orb on his backis from the canoptic wraiths.

These are my mutilators. Built from the canoptic (sp?) wraith kit primarily. I was going for evil mecha scorpion and think I did ok. Again trying to tie in necron stuff to make the c'tan Void Dragon influence obvious.

This is my first "possessed" marine. In my vision of the IW if you fall under the influence of chaotic or daemonic powers you are lobotomized and have any mutations removed then experimented on profusely.

Some very nice use of bits to create interesting conversions.

Love the idea behind those mutilators. I think you should add some organic bits to them to really set them apart from the Necron pieces that they use.

Thanks for the input. I had some thoughts about the mutilators looking too necronish and struggled with finding a remedy. What do you mean by organic bits exactly? Like sculpting it with GS like goop of chaos or model parts? I can't stand goop of chaos (I'm not sure what people call it around here but this is what me and my buddies have always called it) it doesn't fit my army's theme of being free of the taint of chaos and I have always thought of it as a crutch bad sculptors or modelers use to hide mediocrity is something that many people have come to accept as passable. If you meant model components I would love to hear what you have in mind. I'm sure that they have plenty of room for improvement and would appreciate the help!

This is my hellbrute. I think the general consensus on these guys was that the model sucked. I wanted to give him a more skeletal look while also replacing his awful legs (seriously the feet were stupid!). There is some daemonic aspects to this guy but I like to think of it as a daemon that was forced to meld with machine and become something all together unnatural even for a being of pure chaos.

Looking good!

Maybe instead of fleshy bits it could be more crude mechanical bitz to separate it from Necron whilst maintaining the mecha concept. Perhaps some of those DE syringe canister things, or some servos or loose wires. Maybe you could do the mutilator heads the same way as that Hellbrute head with all the loose cables connecting it, it looks wicked.

Also it'd be neat if you put something on the ends of the chain on your tank. Spikes or balls or something.

Nice work here. I hadn't thought of using Necron parts on my IW, but it's really quite an obvious thing to do. I especially like the theory and practice on your possessed, and I might use that in my own force if I include possessed in it (instead of making them an allied, non-IW warband). My Oblits are already painted in IW livery though, and they have that terrible "goop of chaos" happening all over them (I presume it's the same thing you're talking about).

I really should get back to my IW...

thanks for the advice. I agree making them more crude would fit my theme better.I'll try that out soon after I get other stuff squared away.

I'm not sure about this guy at all. It's my forgefriend. I love the top section with the spine and the spikey parts and the back is cool but I'm not too sold on the guns or the pose on the legs or the face. I've heard reposing the legs is gonna be a chore.

The pose on that forgefiend does look a little too... symmetrical maybe? Your other 'bots are more feral looking. Perhaps you could accomplish this without changing the legs if you turn the torso a bit and either drop one of the arms to the side or raise it in the air.

The spine is definitely amazing. As for the face, I agree it doesn't really fit with the rest. I think it's the mouth; none of your other mechs have mouths showing so they look more robotic, but on this one the mouth looks more daemon-y. Not sure where to go with that but maybe it'll give you an idea.

This army is going to look so badass on the battlefield.

First of all great start and some really neat conversions.
About Forgefiend, maybe you should turn the legs for the 180 so knees bend other direction. you would get more hunched pose and move away from "ordinary" dreadknight legs.

I started some MAJOR reconstructive work on the forgefriend tonight. Added an additional section of leg to make it kind of look like a dog leg, should be interesting and I plan to post pics when I get more done. In the mean time this is the Maulerfriend. I'm very happy with how this guy looks but if anybody thinks it could be improved please don't hesitate to make suggestions.

This looks much better, but you should put one leg in front of the other. I would also raise a "head" a bit so it looks forward rather than downward and also left arm should be somehow repositioned (dont know why but somehow it looks strange to me, cant point you why ).

Thanks for the compliment I guess but this is a completely different model. That's the maulerfriend not the forgefriend. I will be doing something similar with the legs tho.

Lol no worries bro. I got one leg and some modification on the torso finished. It's gonna need a tail or it'll look wonky as hell.

Here is one of my defilers. I was inspired by Lemmingspawns IW bipedal defilers. I really wanted a couple of my own so I got to it. I made sure to take lots of pictures of the legs so you could see how I put them together. Something I really would have appreciated when I built this guy.

been a long time since I posted last. sorry for the lull. To make up for it hows abouts a nice big update?

This is my second defiler. There's a lot of necron components in this guy. I really enjoy the spine. This is a theme I have in many of the models but I feel it's most successful on this guy. The gun is cast from a thunderfire cannon and chopped down a bit. I like the feral pose a lot and how he's about to dissect that marine and observe him very closely. As always feel free to give advice or ask questions about the piece.

The worst offenders of chaos goopy flesh are the gw obliterators and mutilators. It just feels like lazy low skill modeling to me. I just plain hate it!

Great work on that Deflier - your has (and have) so much more character than the GW model. I like the tech-magos. Not so much IW to me, but very Dark Mechanicum, who I can envision working closely alongside the IW.

Thanks for the praise on the defiler, those guys weren't very easy to build at some points! The dark mechanicus look if deff what I was going for on the wraith magos. Trying to do a team up army for them and IW because I think fluff wise they go well together. BTW I dig ur custom rank thing under the {DCM}. I'm a huge Rammstein fan myself.

This is one of three of my obliterators. It's made from the unanimously hated centurion kit. I honestly loved working with that kit and would do it again. They were the perfect base for big mechy oblits. The last pic is a sneak peak of one of my current projects. It's the biggest kit I've ever worked on!
