Wondering Why the Emperor Left

This is first full model in over 15 years. I painted a test model at the start of the weekend before I began working on these.
But after 7 hours of painting I have finished the first of five.
I have posted pics below of my stages. Hopefully he looks good and you guys approve.
Still I'm looking for ways to improve my flow of paint, I am thinning with water and on the photos the paint still looks a bit dodgy here and there.

Another question is I added a shield to the squad leader, Any ideas I what I can put n the shield? Just a transfer or do I painstakingly try to paint something unique?
Any ways thoughts, comments and feedback would be awesome, been a long time coming but my 40K days are back. =D

Nice work. I love the weathering on the boots, myself! On the last picture, the yellow on the power-fist looks a bit... well... sloppy.

It's all in the rolls.

is that on the chain attachment or the symbol? Yellow on a black base coat was the wrong choice.
Do you think I should have applied a white coat to the area first?
I also did find painting the lines tough, perhaps tiny strips of masking tape would help?
The BA symbol though was a tranfer and I put a burn graze through it so its cut in half.
Hate transfers.

Thanks for giving me some feedback.

Weak colors (like yellow) can be built up faster over light bases, yes. Black covers anything, though. Basecoat the entire area yellow (if you prime black, a light undercoat to the specific area might help), instead, and apply black stripes over the top for cleaner color with minimal fuss.

Masking is an option (but not one without its own potential pitfalls), but you're looking at a very small area - I don't think you'd see any savings of time as opposed to just practicing your line painting. Sketching the pattern lightly in pencil, first, can help you maintain proper spacing and angle. Micron pens are another option - many people find it easier to draw a straight line than paint one. I use Sakura Pigma pens for doing fine checks and dags on Goff Orks.

That was on the fist itself. So the symbol I suppose. But yeah, yellow is a very hard color to pull off. I myself still suck at it. What color primer did you use?

Thanks dude I'll try that out on the others.

Used Chaos black for the primer, Spray can.
Found it was best for a good coverage.
I could try adding additional paint to the transfer on the back of the fist to clean it up a little.

The only issue with using a light color, like yellow, over a black primer, is that it requires lots and lots of thin quotes to get a good and consistent look. So, just take that into mind next time! For Blood Angels you may find a white primer works just as well! But, just food for thought!

It's all in the rolls.
