Finished a squad up, decided to nix the "faux flying" element and add jet exhaust instead.

Very nice, loving the fire.

Edit: On the second post, third image down, has the paint flaked off the smoke?

Yes, precisely it has flaked off. I've transported these a few times (from home to my hobby shelf at work, then to a paint contest, then back home for pics) and it didn't do so great. I noticed it after setting up the light tent and all, so I neglected the touchups, but I am going to whip the airbrush back out for them and fix that up. Going to have to try some varnish over the top to try to keep the paint on apparently.

Ah. sorry to hear that, but glad to hear they'll be touched up. Hopefully the varnish will protect them.

The smoke is really cool, I've been wanting to do that to my stormboyz but I'm having trouble getting the effect i want. Any tips?

N7_Rik Its actually pretty cut and dried. I've found I ty pically do my most innovative things, and my best work, when I just dive head in. Basic idea is just spray the underside of the exhaust black. Just turn the whole thing upside down and lay into your spray or airbrush. Then turn it back right side up, point your nozzle straight down, and lay a coat of yellow, add a dash of red, spray a little lower, add a dash of red, rinse, repeat until you've got a deeper red base. I kind of hustled through these for a contest but that's the basic idea, and doesn't take much time at all. I've got a few WIP shots I took here back before I was getting more in depth with documenting my processes.

Looking awesome, Im assuming the rocket smoke is done with GS or some sort of modelling putty? as its very smooth looking love how bubbly you got it.

On a side note, have you ever seen the smoke effect but done with modelling trees? its equally awesome and something I think you'd love if you haven't seen it before.

You use a wire as the shaper of the smoke, paper clip would do, then you stick foliage clumps to it until you have your cloud shaped bush then a few coats of PVA glue to seep in and stick to the interior (giving it a full body effect while leaving the edges of the smoke all bristtly). then same painting technique basically

Love the smoke effect. That looks just like some thick oily smoke billowing out there.

I'm personally not a fan of that technique because it looks to edgy and sharp for smoke, which we all know isn't how smoke looks

I looked into both. The smoke was done with expanding foam, I think it creates a more realistic look for THIS purpose. I do like the tree powder method for other types of explosions though, almost more mushroom cloud like.

I used NASA shuttle launches as my reference, much more rounded. Used some brass rod or some such as an armature for it.

This wins for darkest pictures of the forum award. Lol j/k, but really though. They look neat.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, unfortunately the angle they're at doesn't do well for taking "pro" type shots. Mostly their head is in the light, but not their body. No real way to get in there with the light tent and tripod and all. I probably took a million shots and couldn't get it right lol.

Very nice!

I'm quite a fan of the chipped paint as well. Really looks actually worn in.

Thanks....the chipped paint was fun to do. Rip up a makeup sponge, dip it in leadbelcher, dab it off til you're essentially "drybrushing" it. Just dab a bit at a time, and voila, instant weathering.
