I'm trying very hard to do swamp bases for my eldar. (just to be different). I want the models like wraithguard to be slogging through water that is somewhat transparent, about feet deep, leaving little wakes behind their feet etc. I've gotten the swamp bottoms down, but the water is kicking my arse. Any tips on how to do bases of models walking in ankle deep water?

When in doubt when it comes to modeling, I first turn to Bruce Hirst to see if he has anything available. Sure enough, he has something that might work for you (with a little adaptation): http://www.hirstarts.com/tips15/tips15.html#pools

I don't know why I didn't think of that. I own most of his moulds.

I think that fountain technique should work for you - inked 'water', epoxy ripples next, with maybe some darker watered down ink splotches here and there for a swampy, scummy water look. Maybe even track down a scale lizard to cut down so you've got a 'gater swimming nearby

The only problem I still have is how to make a.... container to keep the epoxy on the base, out of the base.

Clear packing tape works well enough. Form a ring however high you want using the base as you guide. Position the joint at the back of the mini. Pour. Remove tape and using a sharp knife trim the meniscus off the top (the resin has a tendency to climb the tape slightly and then clean up the joint where the tape joint is on the back. Give it a quick buffing and seam will disappear.

The ripples didn't come out at all. It just sets too fast. But I'm not displeased with the result
