As with just about everything, the whining is just whining. I very sincerely doubt that many people will be leaving the hobby (the GW portion, obviously).

However, I do definitely see a slow-down to near-stop in people's buying habits. There's only so much customers can take at once.

I'm sure they do; I wasn't saying they don't. More people scream about quitting on the internet (for both WoW and GW) than actually quit though.

Not to point out the obvious, but you do realize that the underlined is statement is very likely false, right?

More people "scream about quitting [WoW] on the internet... than actually quit"? How many people even use WoW forums? Because in the last year or so WoW lost 600,000 subscribers. Now, perhaps 750,000 people claimed to quit... which seems like a lot, but it's certainly the case that while many people claim they will quit, many people actually quit.

As for GW, the discussions on how their number of units sold has been in decline for... eight years? A decade? This is old hat all over Dakka. Or, to refer to the immortal words of H.B.M.C.;

Time to raise the prices!

In addition, the outlook for royalties receivable in the current year remains good, although not as significant as in the year to 30 May 2010.

So it's time to raise the prices!

The Board of Games Workshop currently believes that, as a result of reduced volumes, pre-tax profits in respect of the year ending 29 May 2011 are unlikely to meet current market consensus estimates.

... so we're raising the prices!

The Board will announce the Group's half-yearly results for the six months to 28 November 2010 on 25 January 2011.

Where they will vote on how much to raise the prices by.

70 pence drop on their shares thus far today.

Which the board are confident can be quickly recouped via an across-the-board price rise.

The weather and travel issues in the UK/Europe won't have helped either.

I hear that 'It's snowing' is one of the 800,000 possibly justifications for 'price rises' listed within the Games Workshop Group PLC company handbook.

My point was that most of the people who scream about it don't. Not that the people who scream are greater than the people who churn. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

This weekend my friend seriously got me to reconsider playing Fantasy again and I went out and bought 2 boxes of orcs (the 19 model boxes) and 2 boxes of savage orcs. I still need some night goblins, some wolf riders and a couple characters plus some conversion pieces. I have stood by through all of the price hikes, and I've still bought when I can and I've defended some of their increases-when they make new models and we pay for the amazing improvements, it's understandable. One of the final straws was the huge increase in cost for orcs recently at almost a 100% increase in cost, but after the new prices I have seen, I can confidently say that I am done. Once my orc purchases have finished up, buying deals only, I can't afford to pay for the game anymore. It's been a great run, but I think it's time to accept what I have and move on. I was looking forward to starting a Necron army too, but this will never come to be. I MAY get the 6th edition box set for 40k when it hits, if the daemons/templar rumor is true, but the likelihood is not there. Sorry GW, but once my orcs are done (and I don't need much more) you've lost another long term customer. I've supported you with your good customer service, but I hope you read the plethora of posts on here and see how unhappy you have made everyone. I'm sorry, but I refuse to meet your needs anymore. Good luck in the future, you have lost this fan as well as many more. Bring about price drops and I will come back-that's a promise from a loyal customer.

Really rings true whenever I hear long time gw players say that the best time to get into the hobby was yesterday.

However, with so many changes this year alone, perhaps it's just too late to join at all.

Really makes me question my decision to get back into 40K... and to bring my girlfriend and my nephew into it as well. Once our armies are completed, that will have to be it. Just a wait and see attitude, and no more spending.

For the time being, my GW purchases will be limited to those products that can only be obtained through them, with the rest of my purchases being done at my FLGS or eBay.

simple solution would also be to find some othe rmanufacturers that create something similar looking, or at least swings both ways. I'm sure you could use a warjack as what it is one game, and a dreadnought the next game....

This, pretty much.

Most people who actually "quit" GW were sitting on the fence anyway (or from OZ, sorry guys) and the people voicing their concerns are, while vocal, a minority in the grand scheme of things. Most people will simply (like myself) limit their purchases from GW.

For example, I won´t burn all bridges to GW.
I won´t destroy my armies, I won´t stop playing Warhammer, I won´t stop visiting my local GW on occasion and I won´t say I will never buy a thing from GW ever again.
What I will do, though, is simple: Reduce my purchases by GW tremendously. I won´t buy a new thing by GW until I finished my other stuff (which will mean no new GW stuff for a year or two at least). My impuls buys and main interest will be directed towards Privateer Press games. Any possible expansions to my Warhammer armies (if that´s going to happen anytime soon) will be done with alternative models (like those awesome AoW Dwarf Berserkers).

I'm done buying GW stuff now too. I only got back into it again because a friend is very into 40k and it seemed like fun, but continual poor treatment in not taking their own rules seriously enough to provide solid updates to keep things tight, general codex creep and continual price rises are enough for me to now say I'm done. I'll finish painting what I have and that's what I'll game with from now on.

This isn't aimed at showing GW what I think, they and I could care less, it's about spending my money on hobby items that are from systems and companies which seem to me to try to keep a balance and introduce new and innovative rulesystems. Recently I've splashed out on a lot of Privateer Press books, the rules and figures for Infinity and Malifaux and I have to say I like what I see.

If all the people on all the boards who now say they won't buy GW products stick to it GW still won't care, they will make enough profit from the ones who do still buy to be able to ignore it. Don't make it about them, make it about what you want to do with your money.

That's why I got my Tyranid army for a third off GW prices.

Admittedly, if GW came out with some awesome new Tau models I would pretty much be forced to buy them.

See, and you guys say that GWS doesn't care about veteran players!

A few years from now, assuming their price curve remains stable, when the starter box is $200, and the codexes are $50 apiece, consider: when little Timmy goes down to the Games Workshop to look for a copy of Halo 6, and then (realizing this isn't gamestop) stops to look around at all the different marines - red marines, blue marines, yellow ones too! He says hey mom, this looks sweeet. Can we get them? She considers that the entry cost to this is the same as a PS4, or a Wii 2, or a Xbox 720, and says "No, Timmy, these are too much. Lets go to Gamestop after all."

At that point, this scenario (which is to be frank the inevitably only possible scenario), Games Workshop will be solely the province of veterans who are already hooked, buying the models they simply must have to fill out their pre-existing, 4 year old armies so they can remain competitive.

I'll continue to purchase kits I feel have a good €/use value such as the terrain kits, certain units etc.

It has always been more about that for me. Some kits are worth their monetary value for what you get, others simply are not. Then I shop elsewhere to get them cheaper and closer to the value I feel they are worth.

I've got one last hurrah for Maelstrom as a big thank you to them for the years of dedicated service they have given to us Aussies, and then that's it. GW and I part ways at this point, unless they make some drastic changes (or release AdMech miniatures - I have a particular weakness for them).

And the rest of my group is in the same boat. We won't pay 100%+ the price the rest of you are paying, so we're done. Besides, there are quite a few better alternatives out there.

Yay for Warboss! (speaking as a paid corporate shill for the Pod, of course. )

I don't think it's realistic to expect people to drop a game cold turkey, but I do think that if you're unhappy it's a good time to look at other games. It's not a zero-sum game... I don't mind if you want to play 40k, but I would like it if you'd give my favorite games a try occasionally (and I'll get my Sisters out if you want, althoguh I'm focusing on my Caprice Mounts for painting at the moment...)

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

That's just it, there aren't any. Skirmish sci fi games are a dime a dozen, but squad level? You've got 40k and that's about it. Hopefully Mantic will step up to the plate come GenCon with their rumoured sci fi game announcement.

There are several squad level and larger SF games. You just haven't heard of them because they aren't promoted by large companies.

The problem with games like these is they look like the websites are circa 1995 and the companies might not be around tomorrow.

Also, I don't want to be the only guy in the tri-state area with an army from said company.

It would be nice to see a sci-fi squad level game from a company that might be able to stick around a while, and maybe even have a little flavor to their armies to keep me interested.

On that, GW does kind of have a monopoly.

I just started playing 40k about a month ago, and was about to buy a new Tau army, but now i simply cannot fit it in my budget. my gaming group is moving to warmahordes for skirmish games, and Kings of War for larger scale

Edit: Not that im gonna stop playing my Orks, its just going to be less often, and static. Im sure if I were more heavily invested in the game i would still buy, but im a multi-game guy. in an ideal world for me my group would switch systems, genres, and game type from day to day

Im done.
As with a few other poster's, I have enough to get me by, plenty of OOP Marines from eBay.

This will be my last purchase concerning GW product's, eBay or not. The stores are shocking, the prices are ridiculous and there are some proper good games out there that are NOT 40k and WHFB.

Mantic and Priveteer Press will be getting my hard earned £££'s now.

GW has had a place in my heart since Rogue Trader day's, and its a bit of a wrench for me to stop, but enough is enough.

I have been defending them for a while now, but the error of my way's have become painfully clear recently. And the shutting down of the BoW YouTube account is the last straw, wether GW had a hand in this or not....

I am not concerned with the pricing, it just means smaller armies for those playing the games.

I am shocked that GW would even consider pricing items for their "worth" on the tabletop like the terminators and "elite" units in fantasy. That is just plain crazy, it seems good on paper that if the unit is good it will sell more hench the higher price. Yet I just see a lot of armies utilizing other units instead. Which results in lower sales for those models.

It is apparent that the money side of GW has no idea what the development side of GW is doing.

lol

Oh and the other thing I wanted to say, all the changes GW is making is happening at the right time, since a lot of competition is actually able to compete now that all the disatisfied customers are looking elsewhere for different better games.
