Thats why I prefer KoW.
I would have liked a game that took the best from all editions and not just a redone 8th that will not bring those back that did not like it
I do think though that some effort has been made to curtail the more extreme elements of 8th (which were generally what people didn't like about that edition I found - the wild magic phases, magical terrain etc.), and also to balance the army books. From the comments on the 9th age forums, at least this last part (which is quite important to a lot of people) seems to have been obtained after a lot of effort.
I'm not sure how it stands in regards to other things - for example, the mega-deathstar units of infantry (and the game basically being down to which mega-unit wins a combat on each side).

John, from what I've seen in the past you've been a generally smart and classy participant here. Don't wreck that image now.

Your over-defensive stance, shouting included, was not neccessary either.
@Pacific
Yes, the worst offenders of 8th edition haver certainly been toned down. For my taste, 9th age is what 8th edition would (should) have been if GW had competent rules designers.
Still, a polished and revamped 8th edition is not what I'm looking for. It's just not the game for me. I still have praise for the 9th age guys though, they're doing a great job and putting way more effort into it than GW have ever done.

Progress is like a herd of pigs: everybody is interested in the produced benefits, but nobody wants to deal with all the resulting gak.
GW customers deserve every bit of outrageous princing they get. |

I'm well aware that they're not shutting down DoW to irritate me personally, given that I've been away from WFB for at least 1 full edition (i.e. 8E). I doubt the powers that be behind Ninth even know I exist, just less have any inclination what I play or what I want.
However, in the DoW thread on the 9A forums that Pacific linked, that Dan guy is fething comtemptous toward the DoW guys. [MOD EDIT - RULE #1 - ALPHARIUS]
If "Mercenaries" becomes a thing, I'll reconsider.
Sorry to rain on the parade.

That article specifically said it's being worked on though. It's plain as day in there, they're just working on the main armies too. The ones that have actual 7th and 8th edition books (and Bretonnia). You can't blame them for putting the least used book at the end of the line. How much sense would it make to do DoW before Chaos, for example. That's just ridiculous. Plus it's a fan service-they aren't required to do anything. They're doing this for the community. Demanding DoW to be worked on now, let alone demands at all over a fan service, is childishness.
TLDR; the book is getting made. Wait your turn on a fan service.

Since it's their project, they have the right to decide on which army to work first.
I'm impressed by the work the 9th team has made so far, but to me, it's mainly a game for old WFB players who can't think of playing another game. Like Epic players in 40k who kept "improving" the original rules and close their eyes to whatever other rule system already existing and totally able to be used with the same miniatures. It's nice and all and I wish you luck.
I'm just not sure you will gain much new blood that way, though. But hey, if the game die with you, it can be fine as well. Nothing is eternal, after all.

I like 9th age, it has a few things about 8th ed I didn't care for but it's playable and fun and in the end what more can I ask for in a game?
Got my tree army, my dwarfs, I do hope they do some kind of Dogs of War because I got a bunch of mini's I need to do something with, and they're too weird to go with anything else (same something small like Songs of Blades and Heroes or my home brew madness).

Since you seem so contemptuous of WFB/9th Age, perhaps you can direct us grognards as to another game with the same general features as WFB/9th Age that is equally widespread for ease of finding players?

If a game is well designed (or.. people enjoy playing it at least!) then it can persist without the need for new releases. There are a mass of historical games that do just that, and of course GW's own Blood Bowl and Epic, which have positively flourished since their company/official support was stopped. It's very possible as well that miniature manufacturers will make miniatures for it (as happened with BB, and now looks to be happening for 9th Age, on top of all the KoW stuff you can also use).
I agree, nothing lasts for ever. But, a really interesting question would be, will there be anyone playing 9th Age, or AoS, in 10 years time?
