Update 9/15/16: This thread is no longer just for Space Hulk, but for whatever board games I paint models for!

"Oh cool, SRM's painting Space Hulk. I can't wait what to see what he does with the great figures in this modern, beautiful game!"

Nah, not that one.

"Oh, maybe he's converting his own and using Zone Mortalis stuff and cool kitbashes?"

Nah, that actually sounds kind of difficult.

"Uhhh...."

What how would I even

Now this, this is more what we're talking about:

Yeah, more like that. My dad got that box when it first came out and I wasn't even born yet. I put the Genestealers and Terminators together (badly) when I was maybe 9 years old, and used them in my weird homebrew games from then on. Well, after painting so many retro Ultramarines I decided it'd be nice to have a little palette cleanser. I realized I hadn't painted xenos in years, and I had these models lying around, so why not? For starters, I painted the first 10 Genestealers:

I didn't take the same time or care I'd put into my Ultramarines, and it was a really wash+drybrush heavy scheme. It was kind of refreshing to crank out 10 models in just a few painting sessions instead of it being a weeks long affair!

Now, some of you might be wondering: What about the Terminators? Well, the Terminators in the actual box set got cannibalized into various armies, including some quite old Crimson Fists:

I don't have the heart to strip those guys really, and I've actually got some quite nice 2nd edition Imperial/Crimson Fists arms I'll be using on 2nd ed Terminators instead:

I think I'll be painting up a few of these boys next (I can't quit you, Space Marines) before moving on to round 2 of the Genestealers. I might have some other things in mind to bring the game up to date (Broodlord, Librarian, etc) but we'll get to that when we get to that...

Also, for anyone wondering, here's where the bases are from: http://www.champindustries.net/orders_b.html I think I saw them (or something REALLY close to them) at Historicon years and years ago, and it was pretty cool to find out they were plastic and only 30 cents a pop!

I've finished the first Terminator squad. I decided to do Crimson Fists, since even though they share a similar palette and don't contrast as nicely as Blood Angels, they're one of my favorite chapters:

I know on the old 2nd ed metal terminators, the banner pole was not a simple thing glued to the top. It had a big slot and tab that would have to be greenstuffed and smoothed out if not used. Not sure if the Space Hulk terminators use the same system, it would not surprise me.

But you are 100% correct. Cramped boarding actions are not the place for back banners as tall again as the marine carrying them.

Looking sharp though SRM. Love seeing the old stuff in the light of day, not lost in a box somewhere.

I will lose that banner pole when you pry it from my cold, dead hands. I should probably print out a banner for it, bur all things in due time. Besides, 40k is hardly the most practical setting, come on now

Nevelon has it right though; even if I didn't want it, it'd be kind of a hassle to get rid of it. Glad you're enjoying the throwback models.

I have it in writing then, so it will hold up in Court

Hassle? glue it in cut it off some filing done. But wait this is 40K right! get an old mobilephone, take out the telescope antenna, use that as pole, then use flexible plastic as banner. Done!
But jokes aside, they are your Mini's me personally never understood the use of "shoot me" banners on your back.

Pretty sure all ships in 40k have 70 foot + high vaulted ceilings anyhow. I think you're good.

40k is an over the top place where aesthetics are king, so banners make sense to me! They're there for the same reason most sergeants don't have helmets: so you can identify your characters, and so they have more, well, character!

Sup old thread! I never got around to finishing Space Hulk, but there's so much more stuff to paint! At NOVA I won a copy of Lost Patrol which is pretty neat. I'm stoked to play it, but I wanted to paint the models in it first. I wanted to take a quick break from Ultramarines anyway, so I got started and painted up the Scouts:

I used Scout Biker heads and other bits to dress them up a little bit, since the Scouts sprue is a bit old at this point.

Those look great, especially the scout with the rebreather.

Scouts are looking awesome. Lost Patrol is a wicked game, but damn near impossible for the Scouts to win. Still good fun though.

I plan on using some houserules I found online to make it a bit easier for the scouts; I'm cool with it being a tough game, but the Scouts have to have a chance at least! The new WD also published rules for using Terminators in Lost Patrol, which would make for a nice handicap for the Marine player.

I painted up the Genestealers from Lost Patrol. I gave them a stupid simple wash + drybrush paintjob but I think it does the job well enough:
