Hi! I've had a lot of fun the last few days scratch building a new terrain piece. It's going to be added to the side of a huge imperial factotum (not yet built) but I'm stumped now it's time to paint. I don't want the whole thing the same dirty metal. Should the coils be metal or glowing like a plasma weapon? Grey base? Any help will be appreciated

Somewhere in south-central England.

Some kind of chemical warning symbols and stripes on the pipes.

"Mechanicus standard grey" with Rust around the joints and bolts would be my go too.

What kinda pipes are they and what does it carry?

Promithium could be red or yellow
plasma coolents can be blue
Light blue or white for steam.
green or brown for sewage.

the list can go on.

Grey is a great colour to build up from,

but the pipe colour depends on what plasma glow you are going for, if a blue glow then reds, browns, anything but greens, purples and lighter greyscale shades.

I'd go mid blue with fairly fresh rust for the pipes and a red/orange glow.

I'd try using Halford's red oxide primer as a start for metallics myself.
I have a few images of models I've started & some I've finished in my gallery (link in my sig) -

Or black.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Thanks for all the help and advice guys! Im really liking the idea of the coils glowing blue. Got a can of halfords red oxide too so think ill use that as a nice rusty base. If anyone wants to photoshop my photo with some colour ideas please do!! Thanks

I don't really have a good suggestion but just chiming in to say....very nice terrain piece! I'm always amazed by how scratch building stuff look so realistic after the primer goes on.

Ok, i think im gunna go for a bluey/grey for the actual pipes with red rusty weathering, just like the left hand pipe in this photo.

The rods surrounding the coils will be a copper/brass colour.

Now...what colour should the coils be?

Against that colour, probably green

E: OK, I spent a few hours and went through it with a pretty advanced image manipulation program to simulate the OSD effects of different plasmas, I tried green, blue and red (because why not). I am still going for green.

You can see my results below
