Been Around the Block

Ive hardly been painting lately which is annoying as I have a few projects I really want finished for september! I had a schedule all planned out and real life gets in the way sometimes...
I’ve got to the point in my GD squad entry where I have to paint the banner, and with the little practice i’ve had recently I needed a warm up to get back into it. So I decided to limit myself one week to paint a marine, with 2 free hands; one shoulder pad, one on the cloak to practice pre banner!!!!
I converted up a Loken model, and I’m actually really pleased with the slight conversion. Loads of green stuff from possibly the worst cast I’ve had from forgeworld.
He is detachable from his display base.
And here he after 2 evenings of paint. Still need to work on the green a ton, but I was getting bored and had to do some other colours!
[URL=http://s395.photobucket.com/user/andyignom/media/c00a3542-cd1a-424b-af7d-336ce2aa88f4.jpg.html]  [/URL
Quite happy with the results so far considering the time spent. One thing I’ve noticed about myself is that im always “speed painting”. I don’t feel I take enough time and rush almost everything. Taking photos is great for spotting mistakes and messy areas so I will be cleaning up all of that. Im looking forward to adding the cloak and the sword as they will both be red providing a nice contrast, whilst tying in with the eyes and other red details.
Whether I stick to my one week deadline is yet to be seen! Any thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated.
Andy

Really nice work there. I like the choice in color for the emerald armor. Also the shoulder pad came out great. Very nice miniature for an iconic 30K character

Thanks for the nice comments guys! I'm looking forward to completing this one.
Im pretty terrible on my background and fluff knowledge. If i was thinking about turning this into a duel, who would be an ideal "rival" for the sons of horus??

If you really want to stick to the fluff and make it a duel, then Abbadon is the obvious answer. You could get the FW one or convert your own. If you want to go pre-heresy, then Orks from Ullanor or maybe a conversion based on the advanced human race in the first chapter of Horus Rising would be good.

i do own the abbadon model, but Im bot over excited by it due to the colour scheme. I love the khan the bloody figure as it is has a great pose thats lends it self to a duel, but would there ever be a reason for a Son of horus to be fighting a world eater?
Im intending the figure to be another horus commander as opposed to loken himself.

Well, on Istvaan the loyalist SOH were purged from the legion, so it's entirely possible that Kharn would be fighting him. And, it would look awesome.

There was an interaction before the Isetvan campaign with Kharn but no fight. The World Eaters on Istevan did end up fighting the loyalists that were sent down to the planet first. Kharn did fight Loken but the fight was stopped by a tank impaling Kharn with a dozer blade but he did survive.

Is it that you are not into painting black? Strictly from a sculpture perspective I really like the Abaddon model it's one of my favorites in the HH character series. I am thinking of picking this one up just to paint it.

What if i was to convert the kharn figure, and use as another world eater similar to how I've used loken as a non named horus guy? Also the white and blue would be great fun to paint and contrast well with the green and red.
Palmer C, amazing model and I will paint mine as a stand alone, but black models don't excite me massively. I painted a ferris manus and didn't really enjoy it, and I'm actually going to sell him finished.

I think it would make perfect sense as there were combatants all around at that battle.

Is the gold NMM? It's the best I've seen.
The shoulder pad is epic & the green is great too.
Can't wait to see him finished.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

Thanks so much, It is infact NMM gold!! Ive only just started doing it (4th attempt) so thats great encouragement. Ive tried several mixes and I'm getting close to a gold tone I like.
I always found my (true) metallics always turned out terrible, and i'm making the switch but its had work and scary stuff!!

Here is attempt one, which was mostly Balor Brown.
Attempt 2 which really didn't turn out so well, no Balor brown in here but snake bite leather and too much white I feel.
Attempt 3 (the cloak freehand)
This is where I started to get a tone I was happier with. The key Was adding mourning fang brown to snakebite leather, and using Valejo Ivory. Valejo Ivory is a magic colour, and even if you want to stick to a GW pallet, this is a must buy along with valejo Air black.
So there you go that leads me to here, NMM Gold attempt 4.

Kharn is on order, and I'm thinking he needs a shield as a platform to do some freehand work on. Been searching for a decent round shield but none seem to quite work. Anybody have any ideas for a suitable shield?

Since when? It was always the core model being GW that was the criteria otherwise scratch build dioramas and conversions wouldn't be allowed.

Of course scratch built is fine, but components from other brands I was under the impression weren't allowed. I will check...

Im actually finding it really hard to find the GW rules for GD.
This model, one of my favourites was not allowed to enter as the pot and scroll was not GW.

Both really, I just recently attempted free handing (ultra symbols for the shoulders) and man did I suck. A big blocky thing like that should be a cakewalk compared to what you have done, I legitimately think you are some kind of wizard.
Tips in general, how you did this shoulder, how to get better. I hate decals but they are my better option at the moment.
Thanks in advance! Automatically Appended Next Post: Also your nmm gold has ruined my life too - I never considered that since finding liquid gold, which now seems bland.

Ok sounds cool I'd love to. I'll try doing a tutorial on ultra symbol freehand, but also using transfers. I love transfers, but they need a bit of work. You should try painting really light grey over the decal. It will make it look less obvious that it's a transfer, and I would then highlight it with white.
I'll save it for the tutorial, but with freehand you just have to chill and do one bit at a time. I find I do a lot of correcting, and my base coat colour is always at hand do sharpen lines.
I started trying nmm because I'm so terrible at true metallics, and although I've got miles to go with the technique, I already feel I can do them better then when I try true metallics.
Thanks for the encouragement though, I'm doing the freehand for my son of Horus's cloak at the moment and ill do an ultra one at the same time.

I'd really appreciate some feedback from you guys. I've painted the cloak red, and I'm not sure I'm a fan, I can't decide whether it distracts from the green too much. Do you think it would look better in black?

Awesome, thanks for the pointers, I will not give up so easily.
With the cloak, it looks fantastic, but yeah against the green black might be better and then use your freehand to add the colour
