So had this situation cone up. Tau fire warriors in a two level ruins and on a battelment on top a building. Enemy wraithknight can potentially charge both units but base can't physically fit on the ruins or battlement in order to get in base to base. Is the charge not allowed?

Can't get base to base, so the charge fails.

Unless he was using Wobbly Model Syndrome (WMS), then it is possible to have a successful charge as long as he has enough distance to reach base contact with the unit.

You're right. Was just answering the more direct part of the question...but now that I think about it, ruins tend to afford WMS more so than other terrain.

Yet that could leave a Models levitating midair, was Wobbly Model Syndrome really created to allow Models to fly?
Wonder how long till someone pulls out that picture with all the Riptides standing on trees, the spires of buildings and other locations it is clear no Model would ever fit.

how would that leave models levitating?

You hold them in place on a ledge or wall of the ruin and use WMS.

Given that it is a regardless of 25% obscured cover save, nothing prevents putting the defending Models right on the edge of the battlement.
So what ledge or wall?

There will be gaps somewhere.

but no one does that so there will be a ledge, or floor, or windowsill, etc... somewhere for the models to be on

So Wobbly Model Syndrome can be declared to fit a model between two bases not thick enough for it to sit between?
That is where the 'gaps' would be, little V's between the models which are not large enough for anything to sit on.

Just had a similar issue tonight and didn't want to create a duplicated thread.

Enemy model was on the third floor of a ruin that was one square. Model base took up the whole square. Does this mean he cannot be charged?

Also had an enemy unit in ruins on the second and third floor. As my Soul Grinder was not in base contact (he can't climb ruins) does this mean no charge?

Taking the BRB wording it suggests you cannot charge an enemy if you cannot put base to base contact.

This.

Unless you allow WMS to apply to the situation, the enemy unit is unassaultable if there is no room for an attacking model to be placed.

I would counter that:
As long as you have access and rolled over the charge distance, you cannot break the "Initial charger" rule that states he must make into base to base.

So it's down to picking which of the 2 rules you would break: Placing the model or not being in B2B?

It's really not. If it is impossible to place the model, the charge is failed... Because the model can not be placed in base contact.

Then the charge could not have been declared - as you cannot declare a charge you cannot complete, from memory (that could be a WHFB thing however...)

Exactly as Nos points out: there is absolutely no support for a failed charge apart from rolling too low on the 2D6.

If you were able to declare it (LoS - OK; Range - 2d6 OK; Initial charger doesn't die to overwatch; etc) then if the Initial charger does not make into base to base you have broken that rule.
