ok so ive been playing eldar for awhile and love my army but i get tired of seeing the same army and color scheme all the time, i still like them and will play them but i want something new and a new project to works on.
so ive gone back to my first army Space Marines
my biggest problem seems to be choosing a chapter....
the ones im stuck on?
Blood Angels= Death company are some of my favorite models in the game and throw in that i love dreadnoughts and this army seems like a given but im worried that they are uncompetative an might be still even after a codex update which seems so far on the horizon....
Imperial Fists= with lysander and terminators i can get my combat fix and with devestators and tacticals i hope i can put out enough hurt to face any foe and with the fluff supporting dreadnoughts and the fact that i really like sitting back and gunning things to pieces i cant see why this army isnt competative, but ive been wrong before.....
so yes if you noticed i do care about being able to compete with all other armies out there and i game at a hightly intense powergamer area and i love it so im asking all of you on dakka to please help me and tell me your thoughts
3rd option I have come up with a paintscheme for a custom chapter...do yall think people would mind if i used the same models as both armies and then its a win win or will people say "Those arent red models or yellow you cant play either army!!!"

This is silly for sevaral reasons. Firstly, by the time you get your army put together and painted up, who knows what things will look like. Secondly, they're one of the oldest codices now, which means they're rather likely to get a new one soon. Thirdly, BA aren't "uncompetitive" now , they're just underrated. Fourthly, who knows what they will look like in their next codex?
If you like BA, play BA. Worrying about the codex cycle is never a good reason to not play an army.

It sounds like what you really want from this is Dark Angels. Like IF, they have better bolters (but better, better bolters), and they also have terminators to screen (which are better), and they have mortis dreads and the murderbox if what you want is shooting.

The most powerful SM army at the moment, unless I'm wrong, is either salamanders or white scars. Not that that makes much of a difference. 40k is a constantly-changing game that isn't a serious competitive exercise anyways. Which army is the easiest to win with at the moment isn't terribly useful.
I'd just play the kind of marines you want to play.

My suggestion would be to create a custom chapter. Unless you are completely in love with the fluff and look a particular chapter, I would highly recommend to create your own. Pick a color scheme that you love, devote yourself to this army and get to love what you are working on. Express yourself artistically with the colors you love and go nuts! Play the units that you like, that look cool to you. Build an army that will last you for a long time. This way, you can build up a nice collection that is malleable enough to let you play it however you want, across several codices.
As others said before, don't jump on the AOTM bandwagon. Play what you love, what looks cool, what gets you exited to paint and collect!

3rd option, very much so. Pick any colours you like, and tweak them a bit.
If you have your own chapter, you get to use any tactics you want. Just make sure your opponent knows which you're using this time. Make banners to put out, if it helps, or just a card with the tactic written on it.

Cool thread guys. I am in a similar situation where I just got a couple boxes of Space Marines. I have been struggling over how to paint them, But based on this thread I am leaning a lot toward making my own Chapter with colors as I see fit.
Thanks,
Duncan

Can't go wrong with the BA; one of the unique things about a less competitive army is that you get written off from the start for the most part so when you win its even more satisfying.

"While it is true that there is a very small sub-species of geek who are adept at assembling small figures and painting them with breath taking detail; the rest of us are basically the paste eating retards who failed art class. Because of this, what we build never even faintly resembles the picture on the box when we're done." - Coyote Sharptongue

The choice would become simple depending on a few feeling factors. Firstly ask yourself which chapter drives you the most this is done by balancing the chapter you feel has the best fluff, richest colour scheme and most important details you find attractive in the minis. You said you found BA death company something of an attractive set well there you go.
Last thing on the mind should be codex as it keeps changing for every chapter all the time
