Hey guys, how's it going?
This is a proof of concept Death Korps Leman Russ tank, I did it to test certain weathering methods and to learn how the Leman Russ fits together. This is the first time I've done a Leman Russ so I wanted to make sure I knew how to put it together and what's the best way to go about it. It was also to test the camo scheme and how Forge World decals work (they suck, if you are wondering...) before I move on to my big project that I've got lined up.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with this piece. I was disappointed by the lack of details on the main hull of the tank but that's just a product of me being use to actual large scale military models with more details I suppose.
The camo consists of a base of Citadel Shadow Gray, over that stripes of Vallejo Pale Grey Blue was added. I then painted several filters of gray, brown and green to blend the camo together and make tonal variation. Added chips with a sponge and various browns, metallics and variations of the camo basecoats. I then pinwashed with an oil mix of Lamp Black, added streaks with 502 Abteilung Dark Rust Oil and AK Interactive Streaking Grime. Airbrush a thin mix of Vallejo Medium Camo Brown along the edges of the tank to simulate mud. Then I added ground up soft pastels in various shades of brown and added those to the running track and skirts of the tank. Added splashes of Vallejo Mahogany flicked on to simulate mud being kicked up.
By the way,
GW decals suck major ass, even Forge World ones, so much bloody silvering it's unbelievable. I had to apply several coats of Microset/sol and 3 layers of gloss over them just to make them look acceptable. Bit of a pain in the ass really, proper decals in other kits are printed to the border of the carrier film, not
GW, the whole print is put on a carrier film instead of putting borders around each decal.
As for the base I went to the pound shop (dollar store) and picked up a tub of pre-mixed all purpose filler. Added various grits of sand and stones and mixed it together in a tub. Got a
MDF blank and plopped the mixture on it. Added a few slate chips and painted it with an airbrush using various earth tones. Added a bit of variation by grinding up some earthtone soft pastels and dusted them on the base.
For the actual project I've got lined up I might add some earthworks and barbed wire to make it a bit more lively.
