I'm really not a fan of the big crests on bret helmets.

I'm going for a sellsword kinda feel for them.

Those look great. I agree with you on the helmets. I understand that the crests are supposed to be for heraldry, but I like the templar feel of the plain helmets.

As for helmet suggestions, I don't have any. But I'm interested in what others say.

I think I've exhausted the cool looking human heads that would be suitable, might try some space wolf heads, theres gotta be some that are without futuristic mech things.

i've been loving the fantasy series by Miles Cameron.. i think its called traitor son. The first book is the Red Knight and it's all about a mercenary company. he's a history buff and talks about the ratio of men-at-arms and archers to knights.

i always loved that but for some dumb reason never thought to look at my brets in that fashion. i think i may get them out of the closet and start working.

I just wanted knights without all the frills and ribbons lol

Hey man thanks for the link, yeah i didn't like the crests really but came around to them in the end haha, scibor miniature sell some pretty impressive knight heads that might take your fancy! Nice job on the northern look haha what heads did you use for the helmetless guys? They look great!

The helmetless guys are a mix of chaos marauder horsemen, empire flagellants and great swordsmen. Also an empire white wolf knight.

I may get rid of the Chaos Warrior head dude though, he just doesn't fit in.

I replaced the chaos warrior head with a warrior head with the horns removed and I think it looks better.

I don't know what colours to paint them now...

I'm making a Game of Thrones style Northern Army.

Obviously that would mean whiter and grey but I would also like to represent the stark bannermen.

I'm thinking of painting them all the same except for the shields, on which I will have the different heraldry.

As bannermen of vassal houses, I'd say you'd be safe with the reverse: paint them in their own heraldry and a grey/wolfy sigil somewhere to indicate their loyalties. Like the term indicates, a banner, or the front part of a banner, at least. I dunno if there's anywhere else a knight might show it. I don't think knights wore livery badges themselves, but seeing as this is Westeros and not medieval England...

How much heraldry of Westeros do you know? Personally, this topic made me think of this mind-boggling map. Some personal interpretations of emblems and precise colours, I think, but all apparently 'real' ASoIaF houses.

Edit: also, take a look around at other ASoIaF projects people are painting up for other rules systems. One of the most notable is this Mormont army for Impetus. Take a further search around that forum - plenty of Starks and Lannisters and things scattered about it!

I'm interested to see them painted up anyway, whatever colours you choose.

I love your idea and models... I have to admit I found the 'sell sword' angle a little disappointing as the actual "Houses" of Westeros have so much flavor and seem to be perfectly suited to this purpose.

Even several House banners under a single Liege Lord Banner would make more sense to me; because at least in Westeros sell swords don't fight like an army. The 2nd Sons are on the other continent...

Thanks, that was the bit I most surprised myself with, I'd never tried that level of detail painting before, I'm normally content with a half assed paint job saved by copious amounts of wash.

if you have robb stark, got to get a wolf, maybe from spacewolf kits. only fitting for the king of the north.
Theon maybe and a squad of iron born infantryman.

get a dwarf, add some barbarians you have tirion. maybe add bronn to unit.

heck even famous characters like the hound, mountain, ser loras, ser jamie lanister, ser bariston selmey i know your going northern but could have so many add ons, different extras.

I'm really tempted to have robb stark mounted on a thunderwolf sa in the book there are loads of rumours flying round the enemy camps that he rides his direwolf to battle. If not I will have a fenrisian wolf in the unit to be greywind.

Ok so started work on another banner bearer Maege Mormont so Rickard Karstark can be a paladin BSB. She is helmeted because I have no idea what I could use to make a bare head for her.
Also Roose Bolton, I think that cadian command head is spot on for him!
And Darcy Mormont, not sure to give her a helmet or not depends how good I can get the bare head to look.
And last but not least the yound wolf himself Robb Stark. I was sorely tempted to mount him on a thunderwolf to support the lannister rumours that he rides his direwolf to battle... still not sure I'm happy with this and will probably just add a fenrisian wolf into the unit he rides with to represent greywind, for game sake the direwolf can just = a kotr.

plan on doing ramsey snow, or later on Bolton?
maybe as a support role to his father and in game terms a standard bearer etc

maybe have his heraldry upside down bisected by a black half, or such to show he is not the rightful son.
despite being a sadistic son of a b.... he is a pretty good character and in story is somewhat a suport for his father given his i think lack of true sons,
