Hi all,
This may be fairly basic modelling advice to you seasoned gamers, but I thought it worth sharing. By kit bashing and judicious use of bitz, I've made a number of ork elite/heavy units on the cheap. - I work this out at around £132 worth of minis for £80. I'm a pretty basic modeller, so this should suit anybody with a sharp knife and clippers.
This arose from my attempts to make flash gitz before the models were released. Fluff-wise, they were Goff "dakkaladz", as I don't like the pirate theme, but they will suit any painting style. I didn't share as everyone hated the Gitz. Now they are the new toy, and the minis are hideously expensive, I thought there might be some interest.
Disclaimer - I did this years ago and I have a good sized bitz box.
You need to buy:
2 boxes plastic Nobz
2 boxes burnaz/lootaz
1 box ork boyz
You'll get:
5-6 Flash gitz
4-5 CC nobz (natch)
5 Tankbustas
7 lootas and a mek
6 burnaz and a mek
A pre-existing bitzbox will help, but isn't essential. I can't remember if the ork boyz box still comes with 10 boyz plus a nob - if so, you can stick a nob with the tankbustas.
Instructions:
1) Make 7 lootas and mek as normal. Don't use the added bitz such as scopes, extra barrels, mini rocket launchers etc. You'll need these for the kitbash. The models are still obviously lootas, and you can use greenstuff/bitz to fill in the gaps. You should have a mek and a loota left over.
2) Use 5 of the boyz and the remainders from step 1 to make 6 burnas and a mek. A little bit of snipping, greenstuffing etc might be needed to make the models flush.
3) Take the Kustom Kombi-weapons and snip off the rokkits and skorchas so they look like oversized shootas. These will be the basis of the snazzguns. Save the rokkits.
Kitbashing:
4) Add the loota details to the snazzguns - you should have scopes, extra barrels, lights etc from the loota box. Add ammo belts from the boyz/nobz box. A bit of imagination with shoota/slugga barrels from the boyz box and you can go as OTT as you like. Use these snazzguns to turn 5-6 nobz into flash gitz.
5) Use the rokkit launcher from the boyz box to make the first tankbusta. Use the rokkits snipped in stage 3 to turn the other 4 boyz into tankbustas. I either stuck them onto sluggas to make those pistol rokkit launchas, or made a couple of tankhammers (easiest conversion you'll do). If you got an extra nob from the boyz box, you have a boss for the mob.
Finally:
You should now just have the remaining nobz to make into CC monsters.
So, there you go, starter-sized units of the main elites. Rinse and repeat to boost your mobz as needed. Another box of boyz will allow you to add in an eighth loota, a couple more burnas and another tankbusta (or more, depending on how relaxed you are about wysiwyg). As you collect boyz, you'll have plenty of bitz to make more snazzguns. Two boxes of Nobz will make 6 gitz and 4 nobz, for less money than 5 proper ones. They just don't quite have the piratey bling.
Comments gratefully received.

Excellent step by step for building these units, Ludo! Personally, I would probably get some third party heads for the Gitz.

Ludo do you mind to put some photos of the final result, i´m really interested to see the end. In a future i want to make the same conversion with my orks but at this moment i feel so noob with the hobby. Thank you so much!!!

OK, here goes. And apologies for the mediocre painting. Just don't have the time for it now...
The Flash Gitz were originally used as part of a Goff warband. Under the old codex, they had a 4+ AS, so the armour isn't out of place (I'd paint gold if re-doing).
All together:

Oops. First attempt to post sent the reply...
Hopefully, you'll see them all now.
Ludo Automatically Appended Next Post: Sorry for the hugeness of the pics. Really show up modelling and painting sins.
Each flash git has an extra barrel attached, and a bit of extra kit, such as a scope.
The twin rokkit was a copy of the tankbustas style mini. I used the sluggas without visible bullets to avoid it looking too odd.
The tankhammer was an axe with the top cut off, the ork's hand rotated, and the large rokkit attached.

Cool. How do you deal with the different base size?
|
For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).
Keep on rolling |

Didn't think of that! Didn't matter when the only model was that hideous monopose on the standard sized base. I can't imagine my gaming buddies will mind, and I don't go in for tournaments.
This should do the trick...
