So i am in the end stages of painting a Knight Titan for a friend. I want to make a Chaos Star out of Realistic Water on the base between the legs. So far so good right?

So I went to the Hobby Lobby and got some mold making stuff but it sucked and didn't cure and I am not gonna drop another $20+ to try again.

The question then is can I sculpt a simple mold out of regular old clay and poor the real water from there? Weill the clay get stuck in? Will it react with the Real Water as its basically just a clear resin?

Don't sure clay, the resin will stick and it'll just be a waste. Try Oyamuru. Costs about $8 on ebay and is reusable. I swear by this stuff!

This might be the way to go. I'm wondering if spackel would work.

Do you mean using spackle as a compound to fill the mold? It will, Oyamuru really can use anything and won't stick to it.

No I was thinking of doing the spackle work around the design then when its dry pouring in the realistic water.

Oh, hm I don't think that would work very well. I've actually heard bad things about realistic water to the point where a sales person actually told me to buy a cheaper alternative because realistic water isn't as good. But I've never used it so I can't speak first hand.

I've used Secret Weapons Miniatures version and its been really good. For something this size I am leaning towards EZ Water, its the stuff that looks like pellets and you melt it in a pot then pour it.

Well at least I am learning new things on this project......

DO NOT USE EZ WATER ON PLASTIC BASES! I cannot type large enough about this. I did this exact thing with it and it warped my base due to the heat.

Hey Dare, Here is what I did. I used a tooth pick to slowly drop the "water" on the base, its thick enough that it doesn't really run like water. Once it settles and dries a little, you can add another layer on top and build the level where it doesn't soak up by what ever you are using to edge the water. I had pumice and it ran in a few times, but not to the point where it looked bad.

I hope this helps, I looked at the question and I'm wondering if I just put up a confusing post.

It does. I know how to pour the stuff. My biggest issue right now is that the more I think about it the more I might just have to go with cork around the "pool" I want to create. I was hoping to create more of a muddy slope base around the chaos pool but I think I can use the cork and then spackle over it for the mud maybe. I'm wondering if there is anything that needs to be done to the cork before pouring the resin as cork is pretty darn porous.

Well have you played with pumice at all? It's all I use and once its dry it creates a rough look. I use it with my water edges and it seems to work well for me. I might have a pic to show you

Well sir. I owe you an apology and made a public one on my blog just now.

I did go with the cork as you suggested and It looks pretty darn good so far. Hopefully it will look amazing by the time I add the Realistic Water.
