Here is a Tyranid I just finished painting. It is an old metal model that was given to me and I'm not sure what it actually is. The heart freehand is at the request of my daughter.

Yes most of the new kits would be as detailed, they also have lots more options in the kit since they're all plastic, for example you can give them spines or more claws or extra gribbly bits etc.
Im not a good painter myself so cant comment on the improvements!

It's just that I kept hearing how there was less detail on the metal models, but when I did the first wash on it the details that came out were insane. Automatically Appended Next Post: (and I had no options...he was giving to me built and unpainted along with about 2k points of NID from second to 5th ed.)

Yea, some of the older sculpts did lack a bit of detail but overall they werent bad.
I found a problem wiht the old sculpts was that often they had already been painted a few times so the detail was lost. Once you stripped them down they looked pretty good though.

These ones had a old primer and were unpainted. I re-primed it and painted and I don't think I lost anything.
