Hi guys, I'm currently in the process of forming my own SM Chapter which I want to be Mechanised and I have some core units decided but I am having trouble with deciding which units would be best to compliment what I already have, I am a massive fan of Vindicators and the Rhino Chassis so I'd like to keep them if possible:

Chapter Master in Terminator Armour
5 TH/SS Terminators in LRR or Crusader
2× 10 Tactical Marines with Plasma Gun and Combi Plasma in Rhinos
Stormtalon with Skyhammer
2× Vindicators

I have 365 points left and am unsure what would be best, I've mainly been looking at Land Speeders and Dreadnoughts but I doubt if the Speeders will last long and don't know how much the Dreadnoughts would fill in for gaps that are missing, what do you guys think?

Cheers

Personally, I'd take another Rhino squad, just to bulk out your infantry as and when the transports get popped and just in case you need more objective-covering potential. For another 2 (potentially 3) ObSec units, I'd say it's worth it. I'd also give them Melta weapons, for a little more AT.

If you're taking a Dread, I'd say you want an Ironclad in Pod to cause some disruption, take out targets early on and draw some fire that, with AV13, it should survive.

You have enough points for two Razorbacks and a couple of small squads of marines - that's what I would suggest to pad out the list.

And Ironclad in a drop pod is good in most lists. Other dreadnought options are iffy at best. They just not very threatening or well armoured enough for how much they cost.

Land Speeders are an excellent choice - you would probably want Typhoons. You're right that they are fragile, but their extreme mobility and long weapon range means you can abuse LOS terrain to keep them safe. You could also just buy another Stormtalon or two - they fill a similar role, and don't have the durability issues.

And since you like Vindicators... I don't think it's too crazy to buy a third

Speeders work well in mech lists. Especially TML/HB ones. They flit around in the back, limiting what has LOS to them. And any fire that is heading their way is not going into another tank, like a vindi that’s going to pie-plate them. Effective enough to get the job done, not so irritating to get bumped up to the top of the target priority queue.

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned yet is bikes. Even if you don’t have a mounted HQ to make them troops, a bike squad is a nice chunk of mobile firepower. And thematically, make for some nice outriders for a mechanized column.

Thanks for your comments, so I suppose it's between the following two options then:

2× Land Speeder Typhoons with HB (either separate or together) 150
Ironclad Dreadnought with HF in Drop Pod 180

With another 35pts, possibly dropping the Plasma on the Tacticals to be replaced by Meltaguns so I can take the burning Blade on my CM for cool modelling options.

Or:

2× Tactical Marines with Meltagun and Combi Melta in Las/Plas or TL Lascannon Razorbacks 330, do the same thing here as above to fill in points, or can bump them up to 6.

I also like the idea of bikes, and I know Grav Bikes are pretty damn nasty and I think the Grav Guns are pretty cool and I'd like to include them in my list.

What do you guys think is best?

Cheers

I'd take the second option, as it doubles your AV11 vehicle saturation, gets you some nice guns (I'd take LasPlas) and gets you more boys as well.

Bikes could work, and 3 with 2 Grav and a Combi-grav is pretty cheap.

For the Razorback, I would take a LasPlas instead TL Lascannon - it's basically just as effective against vehicles, and is much more flexible. The TL Assault Cannon is a good choice as well.

Grav bikes are very powerful, but are also pretty cheesy (your opponent might hate you for running them). Consider as an alternative Attack Bikes - you can take squadrons of them, and you can run them with either Multimeltas for AT, or Heavy bolters for dakka. They don't quite have the same bang for your buck compared to Land Speeders, but they're much tougher.

Thanks for the comments once again.

It's just come to my mind on Land Speeders, but do you think 2HB would be a fairly good option? taking a unit of 3 is 180pts and pumps out 18 S5 shots which can also pop some transports or deal a lot of hurt to hordes, which is probably where I'm lacking right now. It's just a thought but i wanted to know your views.

Cheers

While I think they could work, for an extra 15 points the TML gives you a lot more options. For light targets you have the HB and a pair of frags, but against heavier things, you have the S8 krack missiles. It’s a small investment for a lot of flexibility. Back when TML/HB speeders were +30 points more then 2xHB speeders, I could see a place for them. 3xHB vs. 2xTML. With today’s pricing, just grab the missiles

If you want to run more HBs, I’d consider attack bikes. Each one has the TL bolter and HB, instead of paired HBs, but can be joined by characters, can take advantage of chapter tactics, etc.
