Hi, not sure if this is in the right forum (if not I apologize), but I have a question for all you Tyranid players. Is it possible to have two formation in any legal competitive list? Not unbound.... I know you cant have both formations as part of the same detatchment, but is there another way?
thanks

One does not take a Formation as part of another Detachment, though that is a common mistake for some reason....

Formations are a specific type of detachment, unique in that they do not have a Force Organization Chart but still singled out as a type of detachment. One can take as many detachments, of any type, that they wish by default. Without some sort of internal Restriction on the Formation itself, 'only one per army' or the likes, it is entirely legal to select the same Formation multiple times. In fact, it is entirely legal to have a battle-forged army that consists of nothing but Formations.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

So if I have an eligible warlord within my formation I am not required to take an HQ outside of the formation to be legal? Thanks for your answer above.

That is also another change in 7th: Warlords are no longer selected from Models filling a Head Quarter role.
They don't even have to be Characters, but that requires constructing an Army which has no Characters to begin with to be legal.

EG:
HQ
Trevigon

Troop:
10 guants
1 Musciloid <<< Warlord

Stupid as feth, but totally legal.

Or this:
Fill an Army with nothing but Tau Firebase Support Cadre Formations
Do not purchase any character upgrades
Select a single broadside as the Warlord

Legal and battle-forged!

Yes you can have more than 2 formations in the same army. Unless your group or local doesn't allow it.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

With regards to the "competitive" bit, there are no tournaments so far that would allow just dual formations, but I expect that it will happen a lot more often, as well as unbound.

Games Workshops own Throne of Skulls allows for as many Detachments as you want

Our annual C.A.G.E Match, a state wide tourney, allows any combination of "unique" formations. Basicly You can run any number of formations but no more than 1 of a given formation.

Shame. A couple of zagstrukk / Snikrot formations sound absolutely hilarious.
