Hello people of Dakka!

I just finished painting my first brood of termagants, I think they turned out pretty well. Let me know what you think!

Up next on the chopping block I've got a brood of Genestealers, 3 Tyrant Guard, and The Swarmlord

I like the color scheme! The only real suggestion I have is to maybe do something with the orange carapace. To me it seems a little flat. If that is the look you are going for then it's great, but I personally like a little more shade to the carapaces of my tyranids.

Edited for grammar.

Thanks!

Yeah, I was going for a sort-of ultra bright look on the carapace. What sort of shading do you think would make it look better? A wash of some sort? Im pretty bad at picking out the actual colors to use.

If you want it to be dark you could just use a little nuln oil in the recesses. There is an orange shade of some sort in the GW line but I don't know the name.

It's Fuegan Orange.

You certainly can try shading only the carapace recesses with nuln oil, that'll probably fight the "flat". You always want to fight the flat look

Awesome, thanks dudes. I'll try those out and see if I like the results!

I might be too lazy to do all the gaunts, but we'll see haha

Edit: I looked through my paints and found out that I already have both of those washes!

So, I tested out the Fuegan Orange shade.

Here's a side by side pic, the right one is shaded with fuegan orange, the left is unshaded.

Do you guys think its better with the shade? I think it is.

it definitely is better, I would just feather it out to blend neater.

what do you mean by feathering? I don't really know many painting techniques, I kinda just slap the paint on there and hope for the best.

If you want to use it on large flat areas you can put in a tiny drop of soap/washing-up liquid to break the surface tension of the water. This will have it stay on the areas. If you want it to go into recesses and collect around nubs and bolts then do not use this.

I find it better with the wash, I would indeed try to put nuln oil in the edges where one armour plate disappears beneath its neighbour.

Feathering is hard to explain, Imagine taking your brush and pulling the wash from the recess outwards. it creates lines which helps keep it from being a sharp contrast between shade and base color
