I thought I'd get my act together and start sharing my terrain projects on here.

A few general comments on my approach to modelling-

Economy

I tend to model with what I have (materials, glues, paints) rather than buying specifically for projects

Theme

Lots of my projects come out of a single theme or idea, sometimes from an individual army, or maybe just an inspirational thing like a church or other impressive building

Time

My projects are spread over long time periods! Partly natural inertia, partly busy life

First up: the Basilica.

With my sisters army topping 2000 points (see http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/382316.page), it seemed like the right time to develop a 'home' for them.

I have also been playing a few apoc games and the need for LOS blocking terrain was acute. So the basilica project was born.

The early work on this is attached below. As you can see, its made almost exclusively from polystyrene sheets.

In terms of the 'plan' I wanted 2 main facades and I also wanted an impression of it being run-down (but not quite a ruin).

Facade 1 - duty facade

This would have imperial iconogrophy and be the front door

Facade 2 - faith facade (see WIP pic below)

This would have an impressive stepped entrance

In terms of construction it was polystyrene sheets I had accumulated from packaging, mostly 1 cm thick. I used a combination of paperclip pins for structual strength and pva. This was reinforced by an undercoat of bblack masonry paint in areas which needed a bit more structural strenght.

Painting the grey you will see later was a mix of black masonry paint and off-white undercoat.

The faith facade is shown in near-completed form below.

The main additions are doors (made from the cut-outs made when doing the windows - and some starbucks wooden coffee stirrers!)

I did toy with a stained glass angel on top but decided with the dilapidated vibe i was going for.

THe duty facade consisted of imperial iconography- some skulls and miliput for the ministorum icons.

I orginally had a darwbridge concept for this side but ran out of time to implement it.

Next up - some hills.

A few key reasons for wanting hills

1. LOS bloacking terrain that isnt a building or ruins
2. something i can plonk down on the green citadel standard battle mat
3. I want a pass to fight over!

Materials used:

-Polystyrene off-cuts from the basilica project
-filler
-sand
-black masonry paint
-white emulsion
-green poster paint
-PVA

[Thumb - b4_uc.jpg]
started off by using the offcuts and filler to make the shape of the hill

[Thumb - grey_uc.jpg]
followed this up with a grey undercoat of black masonry paint with some white added

[Thumb - sanded_grey_uc.jpg]
added sand for texturing the grass areas

I thought some road terrain would be nice. Possibly inspired by GWs mad max style cars game dark future, which I've been playing a bit recently.

As usual design is driven by material availability - I have a couple of ply sections to play with, and thought some lighting might be nice

Another big. Consideration is storage and robustness so I decides to magnetise the lights - early work below
