Hi all, thanks for taking a moment to look at my rhino.

It's coming up to a year since I first started painting and this is the first model that I've done that I'm happy enough to post here. Whilst there are a couple of things I would do differently now I feel this model represents the best of my ability.

I encountered a few issues with this particular job, namely paint wearing off from handling. I foolishly did the edge highlighting (something I find difficult) half way through the job instead of leaving it till the end. It was also my first time using texture paint and also painting chipped effects.

The shading and overall evenness of the paint job could've been better but as I painted this with a brush and not airbrush, any degree of shading is quite time consuming especially for a noon like me.

I was pleased however with the free hand sigil on the shoulder pad and door, that of the Wolf Lord Gunnar Red Moon who's chapter I am undertaking. I liked how the gunner turned out too, and top hatches.

I was planning to hinge the side doors but botched them so instead of hinges they connect by a thin piece of plastic. The top hatches are magnetised in both the open and closed position and I like how they turned out.

Hope you like the pictures.

Looks great.
One minor point though and this is just my opinion but i think the mud doesn't go together well with the snow

Perhaps not, but since GW seems to subsist off sadness and pain, I can't rule it out.

Thanks jinx and I feel you're definitely right but I figured any ground that was wet with snow would be churned up and turned into mud under the weight of the tank

Gritty paint texture, bad mud/Snow application, very Big unclean Edge highlights, colour Choice is debatabel... Sorry.. A Little More effort Would give a Lot more to the Rhino.
Also try Buying the weathering magazine or a mig jiminez DVD... Weathering is difficult...Snow on such places you did is nearly impossible

Wow! Thanks, your feedback is much appreciated. The bluntness not so much. 'A little more effort'?! How arrogant, by all means criticise the end result but how do you know how long I've spent on this one model?! I'm sure all your paint jobs were 'eavy metal' standard 10 months into the hobby. Just wow.

I agree winterwind85 little harsh. Personally I think it looks great, interesting colour for space wolves, any story or just cos?

To be honest, the paint job is lovely. The snow is what ruined the mud. Remove the snow or the mud and you'd be dandy. Try looking up reference material like concept artists do of slush.

Slush and mud would mix very well. It is wonderful for your 10th month, check out Peregrines Dkok, he uses slush well.

Good job. It can use improvement but, for your level and where you are at you are doing well. Sorry some people are rude. Though honestly, judging from his profile he is military and german so, it could be language barrier or him just being a

Try not to take it personally - that is the only type of feedback I've ever seen him give. Read "a little more effort" as "this isn't an unsalvageable piece of crap, it actually has merit" instead of "you didn't try hard enough or for long enough" to help take the edge off of the stereotypical German bluntness.

Judging by the colors, this is the same Rhino from the "help me tighten up my edge highlights" thread, no? If so, job well done! They're looking downright crisp - especially as compared to before, but also in an absolute/isolated sense (still a few small slips here and there, but solid, generally). Any sense of sloppiness in the highlights, I think, comes not from the application, but the color choice.

You've used a very warm purple for the broader pass over a very cool base, giving more of an irridescent look than a highlighted one. Manipulating color temperature to add contrast independent of value (i.e. brightness) can work wonderfully, but requires subtlety and doesn't work as well on flat surfaces. A more "realistic" (pretty much all of our painted effects are grossly overblown, due to issues of scale, but you get the idea) result could be had from the exact same "level" of application by using either a redder base or a bluer highlight, resulting in a more tonally consistent gradient.

That guys is always in the painting threads being very harsh to people. I think it may be because English isn't his first language. I've never seen him post his amazingly painted models, though.

Heck, to be honest I got a long way to go with my painting but, I hate to even call out badly painted figures and even that one commission company that is the subject of a now famous thread, cough cough. I guess due to the fact as I know in my heart I'd be a hypocrite. Anyways, purple is a tricky color and the snow on the front of the rhino isn't that badly placed IMO.

The Rhino is simply wonderful, oddly enough purple just seems to suit the mini. The snow looks a bit yellow, though, but that may just be the pictures.

I really like the purple. The snow does look a bit yellow, could be from the camera/lighting.

Hi guys, thanks for all the comments and advice, a big reason for me posting here was to learn what to do differently but I just got a little defensive given the sheer amount of time I put into painting this (Whether it shows or not). To answer Hive and AE, the snow may have yellowed a little due to me using bicarb of soda and no white paint added, thanks for the comments!

Stormwall thanks for mentioning the placement of the snow. It's not amazing but I didn't think it was too I'll applied either but I guess I'll just have to study some more reference material. Like you said I never criticise paint jobs harshly as it would make me a hypocrite, if I see something in a model that my limited experience would enable the owner to improve his work I would offer it, but maybe not fully slate their work to their face. I was worried going in that the snow and mud wouldn't work but there is such precious little info out there about making a slush effect. I'm going to be adding slush tracks to my game board so that link may prove to be valuable.

Kimchi, I too noticed no uploads, maybe his camera lacks the megapixels of camera are not high res enough for the detail in his work. Or maybe I'm just being a bit sensitive, I wonder if he would be offended by my critique if I attempted it in his language.

And chief, I chose the colours based on a dead chapter called the shadow wolves and was going to do a sm custom chapter but the lore of the space wolves was too good to resist I just had to ditch the dull grey paintjob. My purple storm eagle is nearly finished and some of the guys in my flg store like it so will post it here when done.
