How many times have you repainted your favorite army/miniature?
Painting? Bah... who needs it!
Once was good enough!
Two or three times, but the same scheme!
Two or three times! I wanted to change up the colors I brought to the table....
Four or more times... They HAVE to be perfect!
Four or more times... My marines would look amazing with a Royal Blue scheme! Though maybe I want them to be a Blood Red Color...

So I've once again grown tired of the color scheme for my Chaos Space Marines, and in an effort to not only change things up, but also utilize new painting skills that I've developed, I plan on repainting my entire 3000 point army over my Winter Break from College. So my question is: How many times have you repainted your favorite army/miniature?

Sadly I've been collecting Blood Angels since their first codex (they were red marines prior still) ...but I just keep re-painting the old stuff and never making much headway on 'new' stuff.

I'm doing it again currently haha.

While I understand the desire, I just leave the old armies alone. Indeed, when I add more stuff to my Skaven (my original army) I drop back to the old basecoat, wash, drybrush technique that was my 'state of the art' at the time.

CHAOS! PANIC! DISORDER!

I have to agree... I am just a scratch builder and a fan of modelling one off pieces... (I don't play the game)... but love the models, stories and all that goes with it.

I only have ever made or had a handful of models... but i keep going back to each one to tweak and change things... especially as i learn new ways and techniques to paint....

I wonder if it will ever end.....

At the moment, I exist in a constant state of repainting. I'd guess that I've painted north of 200 minis this year, and easily over half of those have been repaints. I'm almost ready to get some new stuff for my repainted BA, but then I have an Ultramarine contingent that is not really up to scratch, not to mention a bunch of Deadzone stuff that needs redoing.

It's actually a great way to keep hobbying when funds are tight, and I've easily repainted models worth far more in total than what I've bought this year.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. If you paint a dreadnaught, then keep buying the same identical unit just to repaint (perhaps in a different scheme)?

I almost never strip and repaint a model, but I do buy the same model and paint it again, for no purpose other than to have it in a different scheme.

When you finish models as slowly as I do, even a small backlog of unpainted models means you're better served using your hobby time starting on a fresh mini than repainting an old one. My backlog is nothing compared to some Dakkanauts, but it certainly isn't small, so I rest pretty firmly in the "once [is] good enough" camp.

I tend to work out schemes and techniques before starting in on armies, anyway, so I rarely have flubs that would warrant repainting. I generally save my experiments for one-off models that could be repainted if I really wasn't happy with the results and couldn't fix them in the process. If I simply wanted to paint another scheme or try a different style, I'd do it on a different model.

I've only actually repainted one model, to date. It was painted as a gift and got some really nasty frosting during the final varnish. I could have tried to fix it, but I thought I could improve on the original paintjob, too, so I just stripped it and started from scratch. I'm sure there will be others, down the road, but I seriously doubt I'll ever start repainting, en masse.

That's an interesting answer. I wish I had the disposable income necessary to do that!

I've stripped and repainted my Guard about three times so far.

This is my first paint job, circa 2008.

This is their current appearance.

Does losing you first army to superglue and rebuying stuff a few years later count as repainting?? If so then my CSM army has went through 2 paint jobs, same colours just different darker the second time round.

Also repainting a Tau army I sold to a friend and then funnily enough bought back with extra stuff.

When the rich rage war it's the poor who die

Armies I have: Chaos Space Marines, Tau, Necrons, High Elves

Armies I want:Lizardmen, Warriors Of Chaos, Dark Eldar

Armies I may get: Dark Angels, Tomb Kings, Vampire Counts

I can literally repaint a model at least 4 times, if I make a mistake it's stripped and I start again. I'm currently re painting my Blood Angels as Flesh Tearers now just for kicks.

This is slowly happening with my Imperial Guard, as my current "good" is far beyond my original "good", as Guard were my first army.

Also rebasing is something I've done a couple times with models, as things get damaged and I've discovered the joys of Liquitex Modeling Paste their textured gels. Stuff is magic.

Well, there's a slight risk of gluing something together with it. Only slight, mind.

As my painting skills have grown, I've stripped a number of models for an upgraded paint job, but never more than 10-15 at a time. This let's me try out my latest techniques and still have a cohesive force.

The one I wish I hadn't repainted was my first model ever, but he looks really good now. I wanted to keep him for comparison sake. Still, looking at my 100 or so miniatures, you can see the advancement in skill even though they're all nicely painted in my opinion. I'm no pro, but I'm very happy with what I've been able to do.

I'm a perfectionist who's prone to being Obsessive-Compulsive for ANY creative activities. Needless to say, I've repainted my CSM five times before I was even remotely satisfied, and now I'm thinking of painting them again. Mostly it's been the same color scheme, but I always notice those slight imperfections that drive me insane and I spend another hour trying to get it 'just right'.

"Once was good enough!"

i've never actually stripped and repainted a finished model...
they all go in the mail as soon as they are done...

the closest i have come is a tragic story involving a finished commission, and an Australian Blue Heeler:(...
i was housesitting for my Uncle, taking care of his two Heelers...
i finished painting this mini:

after he was done, i went to answer nature's call for one minute...
one single minute!!!
i came back into the living room to see this guy on the floor, chewed into mangled mess...
i could not believe my eyes:(...

luckily, it is such a cool mini, i had my own copy...
just took a couple deep breathes, until the urge to kill passed, broke open the new blister pack, and started filing...
le sigh...

i hope i never have to repaint a finished mini, ever again...

cheers

I hate this so much.

Part of the reason I repaint an army is because I'm not having very much fun with the colors or the theme, so I strip them off and try something new. I've done this a lot with Marines over the years, although it usually involves a fresh start instead of stripping. I've gone from Raven Guard when I first started back in 2004, to Dark Angels, back to Raven Guard, trying out my own chapter, then to Imperial Fists, and finally Ultramarines. Although this thread is about repainting I felt like this was relevant because it's a form of not being happy with the colors you've got on your models.

The biggest repainting I've ever done was with my Imperial Guard. I started them a little over a year ago, and being a fairly experienced painter, I thought they looked pretty good - with the exception of some stuff I wasn't entirely happy with. Fast forward to about a month or two ago, I decided to strip them off and have another go at it after the release of the new models and painting tutorials, and I've gotta say I haven't looked back once. The GW tutorials have helped me out a lot to get a more consistent and vibrant set of colors applied to my models. I was doing Cadians in their original Khaki and Green scheme btw, and still am. Sometimes I feel a little bad about essentially throwing my work away, but I'm pretty much always happier with my second attempt. The problem with that though is there's always going to be another attempt, and it's always going to be better. And as your army grows, it slowly starts to become inconsistent with itself in terms of quality. It's not a good feeling when you produce a new sweet looking model and start looking at your old sweet models, and they just don't feel as sweet anymore.

However, I feel like the choices I've made with the paint schemes I've gone for has helped me feel a lot more content with my armies and have less desire to change them. For example, my space marines. My most recent re-introduction to the hobby was when I started collecting Marines again, and I attempted my own chapter scheme. It was purple armor with bone colored shoulder pads, and while I did like it and was proud of myself for coming up with my own color scheme, it started to bore me after a while. There wasn't any fluff to them and I'm not very good at coming up with my own. I started getting interested in the Imperial Fists, because they had loads of established fluff that interested me, and I thought their colors were pretty cool ( 5th company that is, I don't really dig the red shoulder pad trim. ) So I decided to strip my marines off and give it a go, and I was pretty happy again for a while. Eventually though, the same thing happened but with Ultramarines. This time I was more interested in their vanilla approach to tactics, their simple and classic paint scheme, and of course building an army based around taking just about anything I like and not feeling like it's out of place in the army. Okay this is starting to get a bit off the rails now, but it still boils down to basically having another go at painting until I found something that I liked.

So bottom line, if you really feel like you want to strip your models and try something else, I say go for it. You have more experience now and your models will look even better. I would suggest to try and be as careful as you can and pick something you really REALLY like, so that way there's less temptation to change them to something else down the line. Another thing I like to do is simply try painting something else. If I feel like I'm getting tired of painting my Ultramarines, I switch off to my Cadians, and vise versa. It helps keep things fresh. I know everyone cant afford to have two armies at once, so maybe if you feel like you're in a rut you can instead just go out and buy a kit from some totally different army, game system, whatever, and paint them up for a bit. And once you're done, you might be able to come back to your current army with fresh eyes.

I am an exceptionally picky painter. I get crap for this at my local store. In fact, I have argued about this with my current kill team, when I scored my "painted models". I had 3 color tournament standard (the models still had some white showing) and the store manager tried to call they were "unpainted". In our current the kill team league painted models get hatred verses unpainted models. Just as an example (and I didn't take this picture..the manager did when we did this contest a while back)..this is one of my mini's when it was done.

It took me 5 weeks to get 12 termagants, a venomthrope and 3 warriors built, magnetized and painted while playing kill teams. I won't do that again..and that was pretty much working on those nonstop.

I"m not sure how well you can see all the detail, since it's on the table, and he took it with a tablet.

I've been picking randoms out of my collection to paint as well as a handful of projects to repaint things. I made sure to take pictures to compare against as I go. I plan on stripping my winged nurgle daemon prince soon, as I still liked how the build turned out, but I was still very new to painting. Stripping an old defiler to kitbash into a soul grinder was the most fun and intense project I've done yet, and saved me from having a dusty defiler sitting in a closet. Sometimes restoring an old model or just playing around can be revitalizing. I used the momentum from a couple of repaint projects to finish some other units.
