Has anyone got any experience with paining in "blanchitsu" style? I find John Blanche's style of painting absolutely amazing. It has a gritty, dirty, used future look to it. It looks the way Bacigalupi's "The windup girl" feels.
So any experience or tutorials or vids or whatever would be nice in order to get some help on the way of developing it.
(There are a few pages at the end of Warhammer: Visions 2014: 11 (December) with images of Blanche's models.)
EDIT: Typos + Visions ref added.

Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

Well, Blanche's style can vary quite a bit, but your some pointers that will help you get there:
- Keep a limited pallette. You'll notice that most of his minis are typically three colours and then variations upon those shades, usually brown going into red going into orange going back to brown. You'll want to keep the colour tones fairly muted as well, so your highlights should be rather minimalist and all variations on the same shades. A good way to achieve this is to put some red, yellow and brown paint on your pallette and only use colours mixed from those three, adding more yellow to highlight and brown to darken.
- Use washes. They are the fastest and easiest way to achieve the muted look and like limited colours, do a good job of tying otherwise mismatched parts of the mini together.
- So much of what makes Blanche's stuff great is the modelling; stock minis in the style aren't ever going to be as good as heavy conversions. The one rule of Blanchitsu modelling is that there is no rule, so don't be afraid to use parts that look very different, as the limited paint scheme and washes will tie it all together. There are some kits that are stalwarts of the style as bases for conversion (such as the WFB Crypt Ghouls, Nurgle Lord and Cairn Wraith, and old Necromunda stuff), but anything goes. You won't know if it works until you find 'that look', but once you find it, it should stick.
Finally, take a look at some of the Inq28 blogs on here, especially the likes of Krautscientist's and PDH's stuff. It's all very inspirational.

I suppose one way is to go to warhammer world and wait to see him and ask. Also I think he makes extensive use of weathering powders.

Weathering powder? Lots of sources. Secret weapon miniatures sells them. Google will find you quite a few more sources.
