Here are some shots of my Tau and Necron armies.

I saw in the rules that models should be based, but I've never actually done that and don't know that I will either. I always hated having a snow base and playing on a grass field, etc, so almost all my models are left black based and they're done as far as I have planned.

Upcoming projects include another droid transport, some probe droids for the Tau, and a way to convert a nightscythe into a vulture droid.

This is phenomenal, I don't even care that they're not based this is just great! Farsight as Vader just makes me happy, you have to do an Ethereal Palpatine!!

Thanks guys! If I learned anything from this army, it's that I hate the white paint from games workshop... This has been a painful project to complete, but man do I love fielding those stormtroopers! I think they're my favorite army to use now just because of the theme.

Edit: On the topic of basing, the only thing I have considered is doing the imperial logo on all the bases to keep them black and white. I do really like the idea of an ethereal palpatine, so I guess I'll go ahead and order that lol. Having another suit for jango wouldn't really add anything to the force.

Total crazy but I do like.

Is the green Battle Suit Commander Boba Fett?

Yeah, that picture came out kind of dark so you can't see some of the scuffs and scratches I put into his armor but it is Boba Fett. The only modification I really did for him was adding a missile to his back.

Fun fact, I pretty much can't say the word drones anymore. I always end up saying droids in games now. I've got one of the big droids from the pathfinder set I may turn into R2-D2, too.

I feel your pain. I've tried a lot of different white paint and every single one is a PITA to paint with. I've taken to just priming the whole model white and then adding detail. White paint + brushes = ick.

While I appreciate the theme and consistency, I can't help but feel disappointed in this, and it's largely because of the choice not to base.

Allow me to elaborate:
The Star Wars theme is cool, and acceptably executed. It's also very boring. Just a sea of white and black.
If the bases were done, it'd cause some nice contrast in addition to tying everything together.
It wouldn't even have to be drastic like snow basing or flock (as you mentioned). Some texture paint with a quick drybrush would work wonders.

As is, it just looks incomplete. It looks exactly as you described: primed white with the details picked out.

Fair enough. I may someday rethink my basing decisions after I finish actually painting all my models. I think I'm finally slowing down on buying new kits anyway so it would give me something to do to keep me busy. I like keeping them pretty black and white though, so I'll have to think of things I could to maintain that visual.

I agree with you, but only as it looks there. I think it would look pretty awesome once out on a battlefield. I'd like to see photos of it deployed ready for a game.

Also, how about some orange shoulder pads?

Use your idea of keeping the bases black as your paint scheme. Paint the tops with gw astrogranite to give it some texture then repaint the base black. After that a very light dry brush of bleached bone. Simple, fast and nothing that would prevent you from making them fancier in the future if you chose to.

I hate to be a negative nancy, but the paints are a tad thick. Try thinning your paints- this is particularly noticeable with the fire warriors and the Farsight 'Vader''s face. And the models could use some details- when you look carefully, you can see that the armor is pure white without any washes or details and that makes it less impressive looking.

That being said, a great army with a great concept! I love Star Wars.

I will get some better quality shots of them actually in a game soon (with better lighting, in particular). It might be a couple weeks so I can finish the model for Palpatine that I ordered though.

I know a lot of you guys wish I'd use a wash on them or something to bring out more of the details, but my goal was to keep the visible detail on the models to a minimum. I'm all about shading and using 10 colors on a model for my other armies, but I wanted to keep these as plain looking as the standard stormtrooper armor is.

Very cool idea, I bet they look fantastic on the battlefield.

But yea bases, have you thought about clear acrylic bases? That way you will always bring the right colour bases to the battlefield.

I think that picture you just posted of the Stormtroopers standing around may be the solution to your basing "problem." Maybe find appropriately sizes shiny black plastic discs for them to stand on, making it look the floor plates of Imperial vessels.

Great idea! I tend to really dig the conceptual stuff, especially when it is entire armies.

That said, the My Little Pony chap takes it too far!

I love the star wars theme Tau. I did it for my army and did:

Fire Warriors: Storm Troops
Crisis Suits: Red Guard
Stealth Suits: Tie Fighters
Heavys: ATAT/ATST

If you dont like to "base" your models, you should try clear acrilic bases... they work wonders for such cases...

If my post show some BAD spelling issues, please forgive-me, english is not my natural language, and i never received formal education on it...

Maybe even a resin copy of the Imperial symbol as a base because while they look great, its still a shame about the black bases.

The acrylic bases idea is an interesting one. I've never seen or heard of that before. I'll look into it.

I can understand that it definitely looks worse while sitting on a black shelf, but I've generally never given it a thought when they're out on the battlefield.

Nuttersucian, by My Little Pony chap, do you mean Darth Maul? lol

Please do share or send some pictures though Helvare, I'd love to see some other star wars figures. I was torn between doing Tau or Imperial Guard for this theme just for the sentinels as AT-ST's, but what really would have sold me is if an army had an AT-AT looking model.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Each crisis suit is made up from 2 FW suits and I converted Farsight too

All edges are highlighted but white armour. The should pad on each fire warrior unit has a different colour round the Tau symbol or to make thing even easier to remember I painted each squad number on the bottom of the base.

This army was built when the FW 1st came out and I've not added or painted another Tau since... Can me snow blind
