Ouch. $90us for Dark Carnival? I think I might skip it. That's a bit rich me for a crew that probably won't hit the table.

I'm still not sure if I want to go this route or steal terrain from Escape from Goblin Town and go that way. Both have their merits but unfortunately probably clash on the same table together.

Gonna be an expensive GenCon for me with Malifaux.

Yea, I'm not getting the Dark Carnival but I do want that Miss Anne Thrope for my Relic Hunters and I think The Crossroads Seven and Smoke and Mirrors should get me there. I just wish they'd let us order some of the other LE figures that came out previously.

Also, what's up with the effigies?

I was a fan of the Dark Carnival until I saw that it was $90. A little too rich for my blood. :/

Yea, that's a $40 premium just for some alt figures. :(

Game or fluff?

In the game, each faction gets one. They're tough little puppets with some off-beat special rules. In the fluff, Zoraida made them to infiltrate and work against their faction, but after the events of the Red Cage which also caused the avatars to manifest, they took on a life of their own. There will be a new Emissary model for each faction, that the Effigies evolve into during the game. Sort of shifts the Avatar mechanic off the Master and onto the Effigy. Emissaries will be large, centerpeice models.

Avatars are still in, but campaign only, and basically are just a bunch of additional buffs for the master when activated and change the master to be on a 50mm base. The old models are no longer used, but can be used for Emissaries if you want.

I'm likely going to be grabbing Mah Tucket, Colette and the Crossroads Seven. I really do want Dark Carnival, but not $120au want it.

It's also a very large boxed set.

Most boxed sets are a Master, a 3-pack of Minions, and two other Henchmen/Enforcers/Peons.

Seems that this Nightmare edition has three additional models beyond the norm. Whether or not that justifies $40 is debatable.

It has no more models than regular Colette box.

Yeah, Dark Carnival is a mirror of Smoke and Mirrors. Same units, just alternate models and cards. It's got more than the norm for models because Smoke and Mirrors does. It's 2x the price for alternate models.

Not that I mind. LE models being expensive isn't new, and Tara was $90 as well. It's basically just sticker shock. Should have expected it, but I just didn't. That said, it doesn't change the fact that $90 is a wee bit much for me.

It's about on par, and much better than the crappy trees from a few years back. Plastic kits cost the same to tool regardless of how many units they sell. With standard editions, that cost is spread over sales for years to come. For the Gen Con edition, it's over a more limited number. Thus the cost is diffused amongst a smaller base, and a higher price per unit.

Don't you guys have discount online shops over there? To me, buying from Wyrd means I'm paying 30% more for the "privilege". The only thing worth buying is LE models. Otherwise I can get them at a significant discount a few months later. I'd skip the sets you can get cheaper later to get the thing you can only get at Gencon, but that's just me.

The LE models are only worth it if you personally perceive the contents to be worth it.

I want the Nightmare Hanging Trees because I really like them, and want to base them as a terrain piece. I like Dark Carnival, but I also like Colette, so I was looking at both. Dark Carnival would not be hitting the table though, so the perceived value is much lower. They're nice simply as collectibles, but that price is a bit rich for that for me.

But then, I also have a LOT to paint right now. So simply getting Dark Carnival and the Mysterious Effigy is the way to go. I just don't know - the sticker shock threw me. I'll see how I feel when I jump onto the webstore during the sale.

While I started totaling up what I would like it soon came to $300. So I need to be sensible about this. I might try and grab a full set of effigies as they all look cool little guys. Explosive Solutions and Kaeris are a must for me as well. From there I want a 3rd Wave book as I am planning on starting a campaign at the local club. Then it all depends if there is a free miniature at the $200 mark.

Oh and maybe a couple of tees as well.

You know what? Screw it. I'll be kicking myself if I don't get it. Dark Carnival and a Neverborn tee will get me the Miss model.

For what it's worth, the explanation for the pricing on Nightmare Carnival has been given as:
http://wyrd-games.net/community/topic/109517-upcoming-releases-and-gencon/page-3#entry860167
yea, but it's twice the price of a regular crew box. I could kind of understand if it was made of clear resin or included oversized miniatures, or all new stats, or something to make it super special, but this is basically just a regular crew box. Why should we have to pay $40 more just because it's a con exclusive?

For the simple fact that we will never sell as many of these as the rest of the box sets due to the nature of the product. A regular release can have the funds made back over time through continued release. Nightmare Editions don't go to general release via LGS's and by their very nature, are NOT any cheaper to produce than a regular set, sometimes a bit more if it requires multiple tools due to layout (as this one does).

While we hope that everyone can and will enjoy them, we understand that not everyone will, and some will chose otherwise not to partake (perfectly understandable!), but where as we can expect X to sell over time through distribution, these you can't count on in the least, and their cost, like it or not, reflects that.

Personally, if I can afford it, I'm going to be buying both Nightmare Carnival and Smoke & Mirrors, and mixing the two sets.

Quite true. I was just discussing the reason why LE's cost more than standard boxes.

Have you seen them in person? I ask because they are their first generation plastics, and the detail is really soft and the texture looks more like a tree made out of gummy or clay. Plus the ropes snap if you look at them. Mine arrived with 2 broken on the sprue. IMO, they require a lot of work to make them not look terrible. For the price, I wish I instead snagged a couple of GW's Citadel Woods (which are more detailed) and have $40 to spare.

If you like them, that's cool. Just giving you a heads up in case you haven't got a good look at them.

I get the costs requirements on the LEs. Still doesn't make that sticker shock any less.

Especially since we all know the nightmare editions will be available again, perhaps Black Friday, or on some other sale that they have.

They will, of course, but it doesn't make the tooling cost any less, and let's face it, fewer of them get sold, because they only sell them twice/three times a year for a limited window.

I guess the price on Dark Carnival was to be expected, still was hoping for less. Might actually give it a pass depending on my mood during Gencon as it'll be difficult to play in theme without having to do some proxying. If it was just 90 plus shipping it would be ok, but the possible taxes etc added to it make it a bit too much sadly enough.

We'll see you there.

Keep in mind that there could be a delay in shipping due to the massive amount of orders and also most of the staff being at the con... If you need him by then, it might be best to find someone attending the con to get it for you.

That's the plan. Last year it took me until almost October to get my GenCon order.

Didn't take that long to get mine, but I made my order really early. I think I got mine sometime late August. They probably process them in the order they receive them, so if you order towards the middle or end of the weekend you're sitting behind the bulk of the orders.

Once Gencon gets underway, the web store should be up for ordering.

I've gone the Goblin Town route (because I wanted the Dwarves and it was half price), and it has a lot of bones. Lots and lots of skulls and bones.

Makes me want to make a swamp set. We've had plans for a while on it, just need to go forward and get the design work done.
