I... actually don't know. Help?

I'm trying to come up with a good colour scheme for Orks. A friend of mine gave me a few Orcs, which I've used to test a few schemes. I want them to have pale skin, almost grey.

Here's what I've done so far: Primed black, based with Bugman's Glow, shaded with Reikland, Highlighted with Cadian Fleshtone, and then shaded with Reikland. One of the arms have gotten a Rakarth Flesh wash too. What can I do next, to make it look more skin-like?

The blue of the monitor makes it hard to give sound advice, but from the looks of it I think they capture the aesthetic of what you are after as is.

Keep this in mind, if you're painting an ork horde up in a certain way they will look good when they are all together, like a herd, any individual flaw will be drowned out. Also remember that by the time you're done with this project you'll likely have painted 3 digits worth of these, how many steps do you want to repeat on each individual model?

Again, I don't want this to come off like a Debbie downer, I just know what it is to paint a green tide, and by the 95th or 96th ork I was ready to never paint again.

Thanks and good luck

As someone who has painted 150+ orks I feel like I have some authority on the issue.

Figure out how to make your orks look nice in as few steps as possible. Doing what you're doing, consider priming in a light brownish colour. It's great for orks. I used to prime white, but light brown is the bees knees, because you can build "up" or "down" with colour so to speak. Basically, speed is the name of the game, because orks are best painted in batches. For your skin, I'd do a layer of your foundation tone, then a drybrush of your next tone, then ink wash it with whatever wash you're using (agrax earthshade/ devlan mud is a god, worship it) and that's it. Individually the models might not hold up to scrutiny, but a good way to think of it is if someone is close enough to your orks that they are able to criticize their paint job, that means they're about to lose.

But seriously though, the main thing is that you keep it manageable, and "uniform" to a degree. It might be tempting to go with a bunch of details on each ork, but refrain, both to save your sanity, and so that they look good on the tabletop as a herd.

I have one crazy idea. Just use some reddisch or fleshy wash on top to turn your greyscale to a bit more colorfull hue.

I have no idea how it will look on the model later, but it, you know, just might work..?

Best try it on some other thing first...

Update: My computer's camera blows, my normal camera ALSO blows, so I'll use my phone for this one.
This is how I want it to look. It might need a few more highlights though. Concentrate on the more fleshy coloured part of the Ork.

pink (baby girl pink) especially for human women skin at 28mm.
.
our human eye sees color differently on a giant bedroom wall verses a tiny figure, why many do not bother to paint eyeballs...
.
pink is the new pink...

Lol, I think he means to start with a brown base, then pink then dark wash?

The two shoots boys look like they started brown, then pink, then a kislev flesh (maybe) dry brushed on followed by a Druchi Violet Wash(Spelling, Too lazy to look it up)

Huh. I did mine with a black primer, a base of Bugman's Glow, Reikland Fleshshade, Cadian Fleshtone, Reikland, and Cadian Fleshtone in some areas.

Whoa, I think we have had a slight miss-communication. The recipe I speculated on was for the models you're striving toward. Your arrer boyz are certainly darker, which personally, I think looks better.

However if you want them a supple, fairer color, I think you'll have better luck with the aforementioned colors, It would be very very difficult to lighten yours up that far.

Hope that clears up the confusion!

Thanks!
