Hello! I got into 40k during 2nd edition so it always holds a special place in my heart. I really wanted a RT/2nd ed era rhino for my little 2nd ed section of my display case so I directed my desire toward Ebay!.....HOLY gak £50 for a rhino!!! Sod that!! So I found a rhino that was built well but painted horribly for £15....so I hit the BIN button and waited patiently while i stroked my bottle of dettol.

Once it arrived i opened the box and.........they had sent me a predator instead. I wasn't going to complain though so messaged the seller and he said it was fine to keep. So I got to work...

Here's how it looked when it arrived...

And after a few days in dettol....

The paint just peeled right off. So satisfying

OK fast forward to how she looks now. I had to slice off a few parts to re-glue them on straight like the headlights, rear stowage boxes, bolter turret etc. The doors were glued on so badly and had to slice them off, glue two halves of a single door together, blend the seam, mould it then cast 4 copies to make 2 new doors.

It only came with 1 predator lascannon, but luckily the seller threw in a land raider twin lascannon too so i could chop that in half and make it identical to the pred version

More soon!

That's one hell of a strip-job! I thought the model looked beyond repair at first...

I'm painting up one of my old Predator's again myself, so I understand the joy of touching up Predators!

What was wrong with the original job?!? ;-)

Good effort with the stripping job, it takes a lot of effort to get it back to that stage. You'll never get rid of the dettol smell now though!

My stuff never comes out that clean from using Dettol!

Pastel...try using an electric toothbrush after the soak. Amazing!

Just don't brush your teeth with it afterwards!

Nice! I love to see the old minis getting loved. How much did you pay for this guy btw? Looks to be in good shape, can't wait to see how it turns out!

It's amazing what a good stripping and new base coat can do. I've recently come into some minis that are in the same paint boat so I'll be keeping an eye here to see how your project comes out.

Nice Work!
I've got a couple of those Rhinos waiting for paint and this is quite inspirational. Be looking forward to the finished product.

15 quid? Damn, that's what $30 Canadian? Pretty good deal considering what you pay for a new one nowadays!

Keep it up man, more pics more pics!

Liverpool!

Your paint job looks amazing though I fear you're going to get more people lauding your Dettol talents!

I'm just going to sit here and gently rub the Exalt button for this topic. Amazing to see.

Love the final outcome!

Dettol peels are so satisfying when they go right, too.

Amazing stuff.

I have a few OOP Rhinos and a metal part Predator that I got off E-bay. They were a bargain bundle but their poor paint and missing parts/ poor glue have deterred me for a long time.

But seeing such amazing results with Detol I'll definitely give it a go down the line.

Wow! I remember this thread in its infancy, but it fell off my radar when nothing came of it for a few weeks. Glad to see the project finally finished (and to see someone painting at my pace! ), especially with such spiffy results!

As much as I'm not generally a fan of early edition GW models (Fantasy or 40k), the old school Rhino and its derivatives have something to them that, scale with current models aside, I quite like. Happy to see one treated so well! Almost gives me the motivation to tackle my old plastic/metal hybrid Whirlwind.

Thanks guys! Yeah I'm such a sucker for the old RT/2nd Ed stuff, I know it's not the greatest of sculpts but the nostalgia is too strong for me to resist, esp now I can paint them a bit closer to how I wanted to back then
