Haha. My main army is Tau. I'm painting these Necrons as Nihilakh Dynasty, but in my head, this is the way it works...
1. Tau Earth Caste Engineers get stranded on a planet. All of their Ethereals die.
2. The planet is a dead Tomb World. That is to say, the upkeep protocols failed and the Necron tech isn't sleeping... it's inert.
3. The Earth Caste Engineers, not knowing what a Necron is, begin to experiment.
4. They accidentally awaken/reboot a highly ranked Cryptek who has become somewhat deranged, but aware enough to realize he's not in immediate danger.
5. The Cryptek feigns friendship and allows the Engineers to continue helping him repair and awaken the rest of the Tomb World.
6. As the Tomb World awakens, the Cryptek is careful to insert obedience protocols ensuring that he is in overall command, able to order around even his former Overlords.
This is why you'll see certain Tau elements throughout my force. The Triarch Stalker is the biggest example, with a giant Fire Caste logo on it's back. My idea is that the disc is actually a customized Drone interfacing with the Necron walker tech. That's why there's no driver.
Next up (on my painting table currently) are 5 Immortals with Deathmark heads and Crisis Suit head antennas attached to one temple. My idea is that their "minds" are so far gone that they are wirelessly connected to form a gestalt mind in the same way that Tau Drones become "smarter" when their are more of them around... distributed computing of a sort.
Ultimately, I'll do a fancy Cryptek conversion to represent the guy above and also do a couple of Tau Earth Caste Engineers of some sort. I don't know if they'll be an Allied Tau Detachment or if I'll convert them into something like Destroyers (Engineers on Jetbikes with Guass Cannons).
