I'm new. In my soviet artillery battalion it says you may "add horse-drawn wagon and limbers at no cost." Why wouldn't I?

I tried to find horse drawn limber units on their website last night as a matter of fact. Couldn't find them anywhere. So I ordered some tractors instead...

soviet artillery always moves as light guns, so do you really want liners in that case?

If you're not planning on moving your artillery, not taking them and leaving them off table is better, since they are soft, easy targets that will count against you for morale purposes if they are destroyed.

Them crazy Soviets, march a million men into the guns, they blink and march a million more. Shoot their horses, and there's not a dry eye on the steppe.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. |

It's product XX652 'Supply Wagon'. They're £8 each and you'll hardly ever use them. They're only really useful if you have immobile guns. With other guns it's usually easer and safer to push them 6" a turn.
That's your reasons why not. Buy trucks instead, Zvesda do them they're £2.50-£3.00 each.

I normally add stuff like that just because I like making and painting the miniatures, but as Hordini points out it can actually have a negative effect within the game.

I play FoW infrequently but p. 173 has a section on Morale called Ignore Transport Teams.
"Ignore Transport teams, whether they are Destroyed or still operational, when determining whether a platoon has more teams Destroyed than still fighting."
Important since morale tests are made only after you have more teams destroyed than still fighting.
Are the wagons pulling the arty not considered Transports, maybe?

It wouldn't really matter, adding useless units is not going to actually hurt an artillery platoon. It seems like an obvious add. I was just wondering why it wasn't a default part of the unit.

Oh! Is that in the 3rd edition book? My bad. I have the books but I haven't played much 3rd yet. In 2nd edition destroyed transport teams counted against you, they must have changed it and I didn't realize it. In that case I'm not sure why you wouldn't take them, unless you knew you weren't going to move your arty and didn't want to clutter up the table. To be fair, because of artillery's very long range, unless you're playing on a very large table, you probably won't have a need to displace your guns.

Yeah. It's in 3rd ed core book. I'm guessing they made many transports cheap/free and NOT count against your morale to encourage people to buy the models to get the free movement for their arty
They explain it all by saying that nobody expects transports to hang around when going gets tough and if they get taken out, it's kind of expected.
