Spoiler:

The 189th Tebessan Expeditionary Force is a combined regiment drawn from the sparsely populated but resource-rich Imperial mining world of Tebessa. This small, backwater planet is located in the outer reaches of Segmentum Tempestus. It is rich in heavy metals, giving it close to standard gravity. It is also tidally locked to its nearby star Idrissia Secundus, leaving the near side in perpetual daylight, and the other in constant night separated by a temperate but storm-ravaged “twilight ring”.
The day side is mostly a harsh, baked desert tending towards scrub and savannah in the temperate twilight ring that bisects the planet between the day and night regions. Due to the abundance of solar energy, most of the planet’s industry is centred on the day side, with population centres closer to the twilight ring. The day-siders are industrious and resourceful, using technology to thrive in the otherwise inhospitable landscape. The mineral wealth they export to the wider Imperium allows them to procure modern arms and armour.
The dark side of Tebessa is a barren wasteland populated by nocturnal predators and hardy plant life that has adapted to photosynthesise in the weak light given off by radioactive isotopes present in rocky outcrops. It is also home to the Alllayl (meaning “of the night”), a race of nomadic hunter/gatherers. These resilient and insular people have diverged significantly from the day side population in both culture and genetic makeup in the 8 millennia since Tebessa was settled. They possess lighter skin than their day side cousins, and excellent night vision.
Tebessa’s history is dotted with cross-cultural tensions and short, bloody incursions by Alllayl raiders in times of food scarcity. Relations between the two populations have also been strained by mineral exploration teams from the industrialised day side making inroads into the tribal lands of the night-siders in search of the rich metal seams that dot the planet’s surface.
The appearance of Imperial missionaries in M.38 did much to unite Tebessa under the Imperial creed. These pious and hardy individuals gained the respect of the night-siders by travelling alone and on foot, deep into the frozen night lands to spread the Emperor’s light.
The day side population were also brought into the fold, gladly offering men and resources to humanity’s war-effort in exchange for spiritual enlightenment and trade opportunities. A small percentage of the day side population have taken their devotion to the Emperor to the extreme. This fanatical sect, calling themselves Masar Alambratur or The Emperor’s Path, long to die as martyrs in the Emperor’s name. These religious zealots are often shunned by the wider Tebessan society, but Imperial commanders value them as strategic assets, often deploying them in small kill-teams behind enemy lines.
More recently, an increase in Tebessa’s Imperial tithe grade has necessitated recruitment from among the Alllayl population. The day-siders have offered modern weapons, equipment and supplies in exchange for volunteers to join the ranks of several newly-formed Imperial Guard regiments. These volunteers bring with them a unique skillset which makes them excellent trackers, scouts and snipers, but their adaptable nature means they are also found in other roles in the Tebessan regiments.

The vanguard of the 189th Tebessan Expeditionary Force is the XIV Tebessan Armoured Company, Led from the front by the charismatic Colonel Faizal Danek, riding in his heavily modified Leman Russ Punisher “Emissary”. Danek wears traditional Alllayl headscarf and ceremonial blade as a mark of respect to the night-siders who fill out his ranks. The company is made up of heavy armour and mechanised grenadiers.

The remainder of the force is made up of the 1st Alllayl Reconnaissance Division, who act as scouts and light infantry, and the 6th Commando Battalion; elite shock troops outfitted with a mix of Militarum Tempestus and locally produced equipment.
Elements of the XXVII Tebessan Artillery Company and the Imperial Navy 46th Strategic Air Command support the main force in lager engagements, as well as guerrillas from the Emperor’s Path sect.
At time of writing, the 189th Tebessan Expeditionary Force has been blooded against a variety of xenos foes. Scoring two notable victories against Eldar Raiders in the Ixaniad Sector of Segmentum Obscurus, they have also encountered Tyranids and Greenskins.

Hey, after a 15 year hiatus and a mate stumbling across my old converted fighta-bomba from early highschool, I'm back on the tools and keen as hell to build up a small (1000 pts), themed army for casual games with a small bunch of like-minded friends.
I had Orks back in the day, and they really suited my love of kitbashing, but I leant towards IG because I'm fascinated with the look of WWII North Africa campaign vehicles and livery (I also take a fair bit of inspiration from shows like Black Hawk Down, Lone Survivor, Three Kings etc).
Please understand that until a couple of months ago I had not touched or thought of anything remotely modelling-related for since I was 12, so I'm pretty rusty.

Im going for a mechanized infantry detachment, here's what I have so far:

I've assembled almost 1 squad of grenadiers, these guys with Accatran pattern lasguns cos they look mean, and fit with the idea that my army travels long distances and carries all of their own supplies, meaning the smaller their guns, the better.
The extra sergeant is for my other squad of vets, who will have shotguns.

Standing in front of "Emissary" my Vendetta, which is only in undercoat as yet.

Inside the Vendetta

And my sniper team, I know these are fairly weak in the game, but I love snipers, so I spent a long time putting this together.

That gun has bits from 7 different kits in it. I wish there were rules for a beefier "anti-materiel" type sniper rifle, I spose I could call it a lascannon team?

Im currently waiting on FW shotguns for my other 10 man veteran squad, a LR Executioner, an LR Vanquisher with a Ryza pattern turret and 2 chimeras with FW side skirts. Then painting will begin in earnest, I'm so keen to start playing

Thanks for reading, would love to hear your thoughts at this very early stage.

Some good looking stuff so far. With "Diplomat" and "Emissary" already here could there be an "Ambassador" drafted to them in the future?

Yeah that's what I was thinking of naming one of the other russ's. Consul, Ambassador, then I'll run out of names haha. Which is good because it's so hard to stick to my points limit.

For not painting in such a long time your skills aren't too rusty. For your sniper team I would consider running them as a count-as lascannon team. Such nice work deserves to be effective on the table. Maybe if you replaced the magazine with a power pack (like the one on the Sentinal multi-laser) it would be a good visual cue for your opponent.

Thanks for your encouragement. I was thinking the same. The bolter magazine just doesn't have the scale to match the caliber of the barrel haha.

So I finally finished my first model. "Nomad" is a Valkyrie Vendetta assigned to the 189th from the 46th Strategic Air Command.
The snake face is an idea stolen from the "Bad Snakes" A-10 Thunderbolt squadron.
I learnt heaps of hard lessons about weathering and how not to do lenses (still not real happy with those) and not spilling super glue on glass canopies.
It's so motivating to finally have something finished, keen to get into some veterans now, as I need to resist the temptation to just paint all my big impressive stuff (tanks).

Would love to hear your comments and criticisms.

Cheers,
Archie

Nice. Really digging that snake face on the nose. Are you going to continue using snakes as a theme in the army?

That sniper and spotter team look great too.

Thanks mate, this was the inspiration for the snake face

Just thought it was a cool variation on the warhawk thing.
I wont be doing it anywhere else, but I have a bunch of soviet tank squadron transfers that are all different animal stencils in plain white (rhinos, gazelles etc), each tank will be getting a different animal. So in some sense the theme will carry through.

So I almost finished my Pask counts-as tonight.

This is Colonel Danek's Punisher - "Emissary". I used a Ryza pattern turret and FW aircraft punisher cannons to make the turret.

The script on the dozer blade says Tebessa in Arabic. I hope haha.

I'm really unhappy with the weathering powder, specifically the weird pink colour the rust turned out. It looked 1000 x better when it was just the dirt weathering powder.
Any tips on how to fix this would be much appreciated. I might attempt to just cover the rust with more dirt tomorrow or at a later date. Hope I haven't runied it.
