Hey Gang!

I am getting very frustrated painting some model that are true grey. Everything I mix & airbrush is a blueish grey at all levels of the greyscale. I tried various Reaper paints, even mixing PURE WHITE and PURE BLACK. I still get a blueish grey. What's going on here? I also tried adding a tiny bit of yellow, but that just turns the mix into a greenish muck grey.

Anybody find a real true grey paint out there?

I am trying to paint like the Marines in the photo here:

Help us out a little, what paints have you tried other than Reaper? : )

Army Painter War paint has a couple good 'grey's that seem to be close to what you're looking for. I'll see if I can find what they were called.

EDIT:
Look into trying out either Ash Grey or Uniform Grey from Army Painter.

Try Tamiya paints.

Sky Grey (XF-19) is a pretty light, neutral grey and Dark Sea Grey (XF-54) is a dark neutral grey. Neutral Grey (XF-53) might work too, but I think it has little bit of blue in it. Also, Flat Black (XF-1) and Flat White (XF-2) would work if you want to mix your own grey, as they are both pretty pure colors.

Vallejo may have what you need from the panzer series. True saturated grey

I don't use Reaper white or black, so I can't say as to why you're seeing blue. But just some random thoughts, in no particular order:

- Could it be that your lighting is adding some blue? For instance, fluorescent lighting and/or "daylight" bulbs (5000k+) could do that.

- Mixing black and white from Vallejo, P3, or GW paints do NOT give you any blue. I guarantee you that this is so.

- Could your brush be dirty? Have you tried mixing it with a toothpick?

- Vallejo has a bazillion greys, some of which are indistinguishable from each other. Medium Sea Grey is probably close to your photo there (plus shades, plus highlights, etc.). I own like... 8 Vallejo greys, or maybe more. There are some really nice dark greys, too, darker than what anyone else produces out of the bottle.

- GW's progression of Mechanicus Standard Grey - Dawnstone - Administratum grey are all "blue free".

I can attest to this - my Krieg use these colours by brush and airbrush (see my post in this forum for evidence or go to my blog by hitting the WWW)
