Hi,
Finishing my first devastator squad and I'm not certain which of these two is the correct devastator squad decal.
Is there a difference between these two? Does it matter which one I use?

There are a few other variants, but those are the two main logos to denote a Devastator Squad.

The little red explosion symbol is used by the Dark Angels for their Devastator squads. The other one is the standard codex marine designation.

The explosion is a icon that has been used to designate dev squads as far back as the RT days, in multiple chapters. Feel free to keep using it.

Don't paint over it... It doesn't matter what (if any) decals are on the models, use whatever you want.

This is good advice, but keep in mind if you're building a military force (as Space Marines are), they will likely have uniform squad markings, so once you choose the iconography, it will look better if you stick with it throughout the force; e.g. if you've used the chevron to denote a Devastator Squad marine, his battle-brothers ought to have the same chevron.

In my opinion the choice should depend largely on your color scheme. Sometimes the white will just look better than the red.

Codex Astartes advises chapters regularly cycle through squad/company marking designations to deny enemy intelligence.
Use whatever markings you want.

Thanks for the help everyone, I'm sticking with the explosion decal and decided to place the second company marking down the center.

You can break it down further though and backfill it with fluff. For example, 5th company in your SM may use the devastator symbol as a mark of respect for when they fought with the DA in some battle, somewhere a brazillion years ago.
Also, that looks like a tactical marine to me, but what do I know

It's an add to the unit, making a x10 man dev squad with magnetized torsos for the heavy weapons guys.
